Been out of the scene for quite a while, but I recently bought a QX9650 on sale and decided I wanted to watercool it. My previous two WC rigs were DIY, but I wanted something in a hurry without too much time invested. So I bought an MCP320 with the integrated pump (MCP355). It all sounded good in the blurb (shoulda done my research), 1/2" Barbs, etc. But the pump input/outputs are only 1/4" by the looks of it. What's up with that? Has anyone bored these out to make them bigger; even 3/8" would make me happier. Other than the potential metal filings, any chance this would cause a leak? Will it make a difference or is the rad so restricted that I won't benefit in any event?
 
Aren't there 1/2" and/or 3/8" barb fittings included with the unit to thread into the holes? G1/4 threads are pipe threads so they are designed to allow a 1/4" hole through the center which is plenty large. I would not attempt to drill and re-tap the threads if I were you.

Let me know how that set up works for you. Been thinking about the MCR drive rads for a while now.
 
Uhm... The threaded barb holes are much bigger than 1/2"... Infact. The G1/4 spec deals with thread spacing, not diameter of the barb.

You can screw 1/2" barbs into the MCR series rads.
 
Yeah, I'm not talking about the barbs. The pump housing has the holes restricted to about 1/4". So the hole behind the barb opening on the pump side is about 1/4" and so is the inflow to the pump on the base of the housing. I haven't actually tried this thing yet, as I'm waiting on some rotating fittings to eliminate the possible hose kinks. Once I try it I should have a better idea how it will perform.

If you look at the pic, you can see that the hole on the right is much smaller than the hole on the left. The hole on the bottom where the pump attaches is the same size.

I do not have the part in hand and have not seen one "live" but I see what you are saying. I too am more used to the old school 1/2 ID stuff.

If it is anything like the standard pump http://www.swiftnets.com/products/mcp355.asp the 1/4 inch opening sounds about right, 3/8 od barb 1/16 thick walls leaves 1/4 opening.

I just dont see being able to take enough material off of the inside walls to make much of a difference in flow without weaking the barb to the point I would be very worried about crushing or cracking it with a decent clamp.

People do not seem to report substandard performance using the stock pump rated around 120GPH (over 400 l/h ) and capable of a 20 ft head. So I would not be too worried about it.
