Alright well I've pretty much decided just recently that I'll be turning my current PC into my all around entertainment PC and recently fancied the idea of installing MCE '05 -- but my concern is gaming and compatibility? Will MCE be compatible with all the same software stll or is there anything new I need to know?

mce is windows xp professional with an extra program installed (the media program) and they removed the ability to join a domain. essentially your gaming experience is unhindered.

What disadvantages are there for not being able to join a domain? thx.

are you sure its a clone of xp PRO or is it xp HOME?

Windows XP MCE is based on Windows XP Pro. When you are installing the os, you can join a domain, but after that it is not possible to join a domain. The reason why this was removed was so that media center extenders could connect correctly to the computer. You get all the other features that come with Windows XP pro.

its Pro, it even says Pro when installing it.... lol... stupid Microsoft. I use my MCE box to game on. When i was in the market for a legit OS MCE was cheaper than Pro, so i went for it, and i see no difference between Pro and MCE.

domain has the ability to limit users to certain files on a network i.e. your secret pr0n folder that you don't want the kids to be able to access ;)

domains are mainly used in corporate environments - they allow the sys admin to control all the computers centrally, and are required for activedirectory and other fancy features.

The old adage goes... if you don't know what it is, you don't need it.

The reason why this was removed was so that media center extenders could connect correctly to the computer.

It was also removed so that mce wouldn't cannibalise pro's sales. I see it more as a XP Home-done-right edition.
