I am facing a dilemma, i want to get my wife a new 13" MBP for christmas but am not sure of what is comming down the pipe as far as updates go. We all know that apple will be updating their MBP line after the holidays, but I really want to surprise her Christmas morning and have her open it.

She uses her current MBP for the standard things, music, movies, email, web, photos, etc etc.

In fact what she has now in the 4 year old lappy still works just getting a little slow but I feel it is her turn to get something new in the way of technology. I upgrade my gaming PC, consoles, etc all the time.

My question is do you guys thing the update will move to the i3 processor. If apple does finally change, is she really going to see a difference anyway? What would you guys do?

The i3 update will not come soon I don't think. Until Sandy Bridge is out at the very least, and possibly not even then. The Intel Integrated graphics cards don't support OpenCL which is the graphics engine for a decent chunk of OSX, and until they do, Apple will need to go the dedicated card route. With the logic board footprint of i3 as it stands now, there literally isn't room on the board for an i3 and a dedicated graphics card.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Apple switched to AMD, the new low power APU based chips seem to be perfectly matched to the direction Apple's going.

That said, if you want to get her an upgrade, get her an upgrade. And don't worry about what's coming out a month or 3 after Christmas.

Same situation, feels like I wrote it. So I came to my decision thusly.

I want to give my wife a new computer for Christmas. She's also getting an iPad, but whatever.

She is using a MacBook from 2005 and she is pretty happy with it.

I'm more concerned with i3 platform.

She wants a Mac. Ohhh. Shiny!

So. It'll irritate me if i3 comes out soon, but she won't care or know the difference. By all accounts she will have this MacBook pro for the next 5 years. Will it matter in 4-5 years? Not in my mind since either platform will be dead.

Meh. My opinions. Get her the MBP.
 
give her the refurb macbook save a couple bills! Since its for her! It will still be like new with the warranty coverage.
 
macrumors.com has a buyers guide that gives average number of days of version releses and what day in the cycle that apple is currently on. Good for that sort of thing. The refurb option is a very good one, especially after they release a newer version, then it tends to drop a bit more. I have the current 13mbp, and it's a good all around little guy. I can run CS5 and power a 24inch monitor, with no issue.

If all she does is basic stuff, and her current machine isn't that slow, I'd get her the new Macbook Air. It will be more than fast enough for her. Also, if you're looking for brownie points via a sexy new computer, she'll be way more impressed by the form factor and SSD than she would be by the extra processor power. On top of that, the air won't get updated for a while, so you can avoid geek remorse.

I agree with ryken.
 
I'd have to agree with that too. Even just a normal netbook, $300 from bestbuy, can do all of that with 2gb of ram. The Macbook Air would handle it perfectly fine, plus you get the joys of OSX and not windows =]
 
Depending on your decision the air could end up costing almost $2k. I personaly have one though and really enjoy it.

Thanks for all the input guys, sounds like even if apple updates it wont be that big of a deal. Funny that you mention a MacBook Air as I have dropped hints as to if she would like it or not, this MBA fits her needs and uses to a T. I think should would, but she says that it may be too thin for her liking. Maybe we can swing in the apple store (Ill play it off as me looking at the 17" MBP which is what I want eventually) and see what she thinks of them.

Don't let her disuade you from the MBA because it is too thin. It looks like it wouldn't be weak, but the aluminum is actually pretty strong. I thought the same thing (too thin) about the back of the screen of my macbook pro, but it barely flexes at all. Once you hold the MBA, she'll be in love.
