Maxwell speculation thread

Alright so the GTX 700 series just recently got released
Is it really the best time to buy 2 780s sli and wait for another year or by the end of 2014 to see maxwell come out?
I've done some googling some people say it's rather close as in Q1 2014 while others say it's more like Q3/4 2014?
What are your thoughts about this?
Let's not forget the TSMC said 20nm is ready to be manufactured back in 2012 which is rather confusing since it was supposed to be done this year but it got delayed? (probably a marketing tactic to leech out our wallets) But then again if they are really ready then it could be closer than we think it is Q1 possibly.. but then again we have our doubts since after all in the past nvidia likes to do those random 12/18months and taking those 18months in the face without upgrading makes us all cry! and we never forget.

Unless AMD releases something this Fall that dismantles the 700 series completely, I don't see Maxwell coming until Spring > Fall of 2014. Just depends on how long AMD is going to wait. Right now Nvidia isn't even thinking about another product drop and will probably be in the lead at least 4 more solid months given AMD tends to drop new GPU's either end of year or very beginning of the year. Expect a 4-6 month release from Nvidia whenever that happens.

AMD will beta test the 20nm process, Nvidia will take advantage of all the kinks that get worked out afterwards. Then again, if you listen to all the talk 20nm is delaying AMD's introduction of a new card and wont be able to manufacture large quantities until the very end of the year.

With that said.
Intro AMD Radeon 8xxx or 9xxx whatever they decide confuses the market more: Winter 2013 (Nov/Dec)
Nvidia Maxwell rumors start to circulate in this time and the more accurate ones will probably float on the web sometime in May 2014 so basically disregard every rumor before this month.
Maxwell 800 Series will drop Fall (Sep.) 2014.

Given the 780 is basically a fricken Titan, AMD has to drop something massive at the top tier. Imagine a Titan +20/25%? AMD would be foollish to drop an 8970/9970 that can't do that.

True, although they created a sort of conspiracy limbo state with whether or not Sea Islands is being skipped altogether and they are moving to Volcanic Islands or not. Sea Islands wasn't supposed to be a major boost and now that Nvidia dropped two generations (well 1 in a half) I can't see that happening now.

Now that Nvidia showed their cards. All AMD has to do it match the performance with a slight boost. There is no reason for them to make the ultimate GPU to counter Nvidia. If it's faster than the competition, people will buy and it will pay the price premium of $650+. I was amazed how well the titan sold for $1000. That's another market AMD can now shoot for.

I am personally waiting for Maxwell myself. GTX 780 is nice don't get me wrong. But I feel the GTX 780s isn't as powerful as I would like. I am hoping Maxwell will be a good video card for us high resolution gamers.

The 780 has 90% the performance of Titan for 'only' 65% the price. The main difference missing is an extra 3GB of vram. A 6gb version of the 780 will probably arrive later at maybe $699-750 pricepoint. But at that point most people would probably be buying Titans unless they are sold out by then.

That's what I was hoping for from EVGA. That they might add a 6GB GTX 780. But I am also thinking a GTX 790 for fall? Still needs two GPUs for 2560x1600 with all the bells and whistles enabled

Since this is the speculation thread, what value do you here peeps think the 64-bit embedded ARM chip is going to provide for gamers, if anything? I can see a strong point for CUDA but I'm just wondering if anyone has any ideas about other possible usages.

My guess would be they intend to use it to perform tasks that incur a latency penalty if sent out to the system cpu. Having an independent ARM base core on the card would also allow you to perform some security related tasks independently of the GPU processing. The design photos of AMD's next gen of cards specifically have the ARM chip on it marked as being security related. We've been unable to figure out specifically for what as the word behind security was still too blurry to make out even after trying to enhance the photo.

I'm curious about this myself. Since I'm in my once every two years folding craze, that's whats mostly on my mind. If they go ARM I imagine the core freqs will sky rocket, which leads me to wonder if or how that'll affect the shader clock rate if they decide to keep them in-sync or separate them again. Either way I can't help but think with the Titan and 780 being so close that the Maxwell series will have to dominate it as well in retaliation for the AMD 8000 Series. Given those two cards are already doing 150K PPD I'm dreaming we will hit a new era of 200K PPD single video cards. That's my dream at least. I'm sure they'll be kick ass for everything else, but besides eventually allowing the ARM core to run independently from the CPU while later on allowing the GPU core to access main memory (think AMD HSA) that could be very significant.

Time will tell how that works out though. They've been touting the ability of having the Video Card become its own miniature full fledged computer without having to rely as much on the main system, so perhaps that's where its going. If that comes true I imagine a nice boost just from the simple fact the CPU/GPU will have less reliance on each other. Of course I'm talking out my ass.



It'll be interesting to see how it plays out nonetheless.
