I looking into getting a SATA maxtor HD, the 2 lines they have I am looking at MaXLine III, and DiamondMax are very similar, which one should I be looking at, or are they pretty much the same?

Maxline III = 5 year warranty (oem)
DiamondMax = 3 year warranty (oem)
 
Definitely Seagate. Nothing but good experiences with them here. As you can see from my sig I am
running that very drive right now.

As for Maxtor? I have had far too much trouble with them for me to feel safe recommending Maxtor to anyone.

Actually, I'd go for that particular Seagate only if it's significantly cheaper than the Maxtor.

Do you want to know why?

First, it is a smaller capacity drive than the Maxtor.

Second, it has only half the cache memory of the Maxtor.

On the other hand, I don't recommend buying hard drives from NewEgg. That's due to their craptacular packing methods.
 
I would go with Maxtor. I have never had one drive fail me from them. Unlike WD where I have had to RMA a drive twice and different one went out this summer...
 
I wouldn't base my opinions of the drives' reliability based on such a small sample size as a few forum members. All brands have drives that would fail, so it's really a gamble.

On that note, like E4g1e said, there really isn't a reason to get the smaller drive unless it is signifigantly cheaper than the larger.

And yes, don't buy from newegg. They don't use approved packaging by the manufacturers (you can look on Maxtor's website, or Seagate's, etc.). They use bubble wrap and peanuts, which are specifically termed as "not acceptable packing meterials."

I'd buy from either zip zoom fly or hypermicrosystems. Both have good packing methods.

I'm quite on the opposite side from you. I've had 4 maxtor's fails so far, but the 5 WD drives that are, or were in my position are still running strong. Luck of the draw I guess.

From May of 2004? Overly influenced by the DeathStar 60GXP disaster. IBM was rightfully punished for allowing the 60GXP to have significant reliability issues because of a design defect. Also, Maxtor's "strong" showing in that poll was proably influenced by some bad design decisions they made. The last post in that thread was back in August. The storage landscape has changed quite a bit since then. All of the major HDD makers manufacture "reliable" products. A drive is much more likely to die from an environmental hazard than manufacturign defect or poor quality control nowadays.

So, you think the poll is totally useless then?
Has the storage landscape really changed that much for all companies involved in only two months?

The poll is a result of people's past experiences over time. I really don't think one of
people who bought their drives ONLY over the last two months would give a good indication
of the product's longevity.

- P. S. - I have started HDD reliability polls in a couple forums. We should have a better
indication of what is hot & cold now in a couple weeks. Would post a poll here at [H] but
not sure how afraid to say.
 
Indeed. I have never had any problems with Maxtor drives until this weekend when I had a 200Gb die in my server. But I'm not sure it was a hardware issue yet, just a corrupt partition. I have had 8 Maxtors over the last 3 years all but this one have run fine. A friend on the other hand has had 5 in a row completely die on him so wont go for anything but Seagate. From what I have read the Seagate's are the most robust and reliable, also more expensive than the maxtors.

I just ordered 2 250GB SATA maxtor Diamondmax driver though so....
 
In my experience as a PC tech, I have seen few of all brands of HD's die. Although the 'Deathstars' were by far the worst, closely followed by Maxtor. WD and Seagates so far have been the best.

For all the whining about Newegg unapproved shipping, out of the dozens of drives from them, I have never had a bad one, while I've had DOA drives in the 'approved' packaging. I really don't see why the approved half inch foam is better than a thick layer of bubble wrap.

Although I'll admit that now I usually buy HD's from zzf because they usually have better prices for HD's and the free 2 day shipping is nice.
 
I've seen 4 different hitachi drives, less than a year old die on different platforms recently. Good thing Hitachi RMA is good.
 
no, No, NO! Hitachi uses the same cases as the old IBM drives, but that's where the similarity to IBM drives ends. Starting with the 7K250, Hitachi's designs are very much their own.

thanks, I was just about to say that. From a personal preference, I would buy seagate over maxtor, but I am very price conscious. In the past years I have come to realize that warranty llength is important for me, since I have had to RMA quite a couple of drives.

 
i wanted to get hitachi 250sata but it's so overpriced here in canada so i'm getting a maxtor diamondmax 10 now...is this a good series?

My main rig is running a DiamondMax 10 250 and it's been excellent. Although I haven't had the courage to enable NCQ on mine yet since lots of people had corruption problems on A8N-SLI motherboards like mine.

Anyone know if NCQ works okay on that board now?
