Hello

I just found out today my Maxtor 80 gb 7200 rpm 2 mb cashe HDD is dead. It doesn't boot up anymore.

I got it 2 n half years ago.

But the biggest problem is not that... The problem is I lost the box and warrenty card the came with the hard drive due to someone breaking into my house and took some computer parts and box when they were stealing..

Will maxtor replace my hard drive without any warrenty card etc?

I check on the website and it said my Warrenty will be over in about 5 months or so.

Thanx

You can probably go to their site and see if your drive is still under warranty.

Ya maxtor will take it back if its under warranty just remember maxtor requires you to run there diagnostic program which will give you a code on whats wrong with the hd. Then just follow the packaging guidelines on the website and ship it back to them and wait for your new hd.

what does RMA number mean?

I ran the powermax test "full test" and i got a error and they gave me Y2MS57

Is that my RMA number?

What does RMA stand for?

Y2MS57 is the one of the numbers Maxtor uses to know what is wrong with the hard drive. When you fill out the rma form you will need to give this number to them. Also RMA stands for Return Material Authorization

Yes. Just go to the support page on the Maxtor website. There should be a link for it. Follow the instruction there and it should tell you whether your drive is still under warranty (depending on the model and serial number). It will also ask for that error code from the diagnostic program. It will then confirm the return and e-mail you the RMA number along with the packaging & shipping instruction. I think in some cases you can even opt for them to ship you a new drive before they get your bad drive.
Only return a drive with an RMA number *and* proper packaging as described in their instruction. Otherwise it is very likely that they will reject your return. Once your return is rejected, I doubt they will accept a return for that same drive. If you can get them to ship a new drive first, you can use the new drive packaging to send your old drive back. They won't reject their own packaging.
Overall, I found an Maxtor return process to be pretty good. Although that the fact that I have to return a hard drive is never good!
Good luck.
