Maxtor V's Western Digital. please help?

ok so what is the best to go for:

250 GB Maxtor DiamondMax 10 lead free 7200rpm 16MB ATA133 Cache oem

or

160 GB Western Digital Caviar 8MB Cache 7200rpm ATA100 (JB) oem

there is only 3 UK pound difference between them which is about 6 USD ish. the only reason i as for peoples advice is because i understand that WD are a better brand than maxstor.....so is it better to go with the better brand WD with loss of storage or got with the lesser brand Maxtor and have more storage?

Maxtor all the way. 16MB > 8MB, bigger drive with higher density. The WD will run cooler and quieter, so if that's important to you, pick up the WD. For performance and value, the Maxtor is far superior.
 
well this is what i thought. however i have only owned 1 maxtor b4 from new and it fucked up on me, so my faith in them is not so great but it does seams good value for my money compared to the WD.

any other views?
 
Maxtor is a much better value for $6 difference.

I've owned both brands of drives, I've seen both brands fail. The WD in my current rig is failing, the (rarely used as it's always unplugged) Maxtor is still running strong. The WD replaced my Maxtor.

If your data is most important, then develop a good backup schedule as ANY HDD will fail.

Out of the two, I'd go with the Maxtor. Have you thought about a Seagate? I am buying one of those in a few minutes (thanks to the HDD buying guide... credit to Doug and Vertigo) because I like the quiet and I like the warranty.
 
My bucks are on WD all the way, I've owned 2 Maxtors and they both failed. I've had a total of 14 WD's now and even the old ones that are now on other peoples systems still work. Maybe it's because they do run cooler.
 
I am not a huge fan of older Maxtors either. However, the DiamondMax10/MaxLineIII have been improved significantly over past Maxtor drives in just about very area except heat/power consumption.
 
thanks for all the comments. think ill go with the maxtor as i realy need the extra storage. as for seagate my old socket A system has a 6 year old 40gb barracuda and is still going strong. just cant find a good deal on seagate at my local PC store.
 
I'm a western digital fan, but like most it's because of personal experience. I've never had one go bad on me.

The 16MB cache on the maxtor the best thing going between these drives. I'd compare the maxtor to a WD with a 16 MB cache before I made a decision. I don't think this WD really compares to the maxtor. The maxtor is the better drive here.
 
90 more gigs, twice the cache, and later technology for 6 bucks? I'd take that. Thats why there are warranties ;)
