Maxtor... still suck?

The PC I'm on right now is running off a 40GB slimline, and another PC in my house is running off a 30gb slimline, and have been doing so for a few years now without a single hiccup (I wish all drives were as quiet as these!)

I've had a couple of the slimline drives fail on me, and one DM9 has bad sectors... not to mention the rebadged Quantom's are a bit sketchy. But every other Maxtor drive I've ever owned prior to, and after that (DM10) has been absolutely fantastic and still going strong in my PCs, new and old. In fact, aside from the Raptors, the DM10's are an awesome consumer drive that I'd recommend to anyone, and Maxtor remains my favourite HD company (I've had more WD's fail on me, actually, and will only buy their trailblazing Raptors). And if WD is the Nintendo of the HDD business, then they are in fantastic financial shape and make the most money of all the companies :p
 
I believe the Quantum fiasco is responsible for much of the stigma of Maxtor's quality.(Is stigma the word I'm looking for?)

Fujitsu is great in the SCSI/notebook arena, but I don't see them competing that well against WD and Seagate in the desktop market. Samsung/Toshiba are also mostly notebook drive makers too aren't they? Unless Hitatchi makes a huge comeback with the Deskstars, I see the desktop market being pretty much a two-horse race with a few minor players.

Doesnt Hitachi have an 80GB SATA II drive that is supposed to be a good perfomer for a good price point?
 
In the last 2 years I have lost 4 maxtor disks (3xDM9), I am currently in the RMA process of the 4th DM10 that started clicking on me, luckily I got all my data off it.
The other evening I turned on my box and my Maxline III was no longer recognised, a power cycle rectified this but enough damage was done to my confidence that I am getting rid of it and Maxtor ASAP.

Best thing about Maxtor is the RMA process, they send you the drive before you send the old one back.
I bought a Seagate 300 7200.9 to replace the Maxline III that looks like it might be on it's way out.

But I won't be queuing for a Maxtor drive anytime soon.
 
i currently run 2 120's (not sure if its a dm_ how do i know?). They are the 8mb cache ones. These are the 2nd pair of 120's i've owned. the previous 2 died. And my secondary 120 is starting to make noise. It even caused my mobo to reboot so i had to unplug it and replug it and now it works. Im quickly backing the drive up as i type. Lol time to rma again
 
What model number are your Maxtor units? You can look at the top of the drive case, or at their properties in device manager. Maxtor model numbers read nxnnnxn, where n is a number and x is a letter.
 
After being in a similar situation for many posters, i.e. Professional tech replacing MANY maxtor drives, I won't touch them with YOUR hand. The funny thing is the longest lasting maxtor drive ever on my watch is the 80gb in my personal Dish Network DVR receiver, and that SOB hasn't shut down in like 3 years...
 
I have always had the best of luck with Maxtor. I have had drives by Maxtor, IBM, and WD (never had a Seagate as they always seemed overpriced compared to the others), and I've always loved the Maxtors.

I have 2 gig maxtor drive running in a linux playbox right now that has been going straight for almost, well, no, actually 10 years now (well, there was a 6month period or so I think when it was mothballed). I have another one in my main rig (a 250 gig) that has been going for 3 years straight without a hiccup (knock on wood) and I hope to get at least two more years out of it. Honestly, I'd be very dissapointed in any hard drive that didn't last at least 5 years of constant or near constant use.

I've had the best luck with Maxtor and even have a 5gb drive working just fine in one of my old rigs, and I've had the worst luck with WD, with multiple drives failing in one way or another (and there were in the 20-30gb range). That said, I'm still getting a Raptor :)
