I was wondering what is a good packing material to use when shipping a drive to maxtor for RMA. They seem very strict about what you use.

What type of rma did you do?
I remember RMAing a hd to maxtor and they shipped me one out before I returned the bad one. I used the packaging material they gave me. The package material they had one those plastic hd molds which go on each end of the harddrive.

Of course that option was they charge your creditcard and refund the money as soon as they receive the defected one back.

You can go to a store that sells some sort of foam and cut out a square from it,but not all the way through. Keep the top and put the hd in a anti-static bag.

They dont charge anything as long as they get it in 30 days. This is a great way to go, since you can backup anything from your old HD if its still partially alive.

That's a great link. Those are good ways to go. Bubble wrap is not acceptable packaging, and may get your RMA turned down.

If you don't have the plastic thingies from when you bought the drive, or bought it OEM, fabric stores will carry foam rubber sheets; cut one rectangle for the bottom, a hole in one for the drive, and another rectangle for the top. I think the recommendation is 1" of foam on all sides minimum.
