Maxtor One Touch Help

I bought a maxtor one touch HD last year in september, i needed to back up some files onto the drive, out of the box, it worked fine, i didnt even need to install the software, just plug n play, and i transfered the files fine, now, every time i tried after that, the damn drive wont appear on my computer, ill connect the drive, and the usb will recognize it, the comp will say its installed and ready to use, but when i go to my computer, its not there, when i look in the device manager it shows the drive, but not on my computer, what can i do to access the damn drive?? :confused:
 
start > run > (type) diskmgmt.msc

whats it listed as?
off hand Id guess a cabling signal issue
though reloading the USB drivers might help
 
Your "mass storage" driver may have gon south for the winter. They hate the cold, you know.

Drop in the Mobo disk, go to your device Mgr. and reinstall the drivers. :)

sigh...didnt work....when i opened the manager i saw the drive was talkin to the comp but it didnt show up

Motherboards come with a driver and utility disk (CD). This disk has the chipset, ethernet, USB, audio and video drivers. It is much easier than using Google.

Mass storage refers to USB devices ie. HDD's, USB dongles and so on.
 
well
its likely either a cabling issue
a driver issue
or a HDD issue

by connecting the drive as an internal you can test the later with the manufactirers diagnostic
by replacing the cable you can eliminate it, but not its interfaces to the drive
(the USB to IDE bridge)
by reloading the drivers you can hope to fix a corrupted driver
either the USB or busmaster drivers (main mobo chipset drivers)

also give a review to the BIOS options though considering those where previously working...
its unlikely a bad CMOS battery would only effect this

Generally, it a driver issue, however, that's a good idea. Take the Maxtor apart and connect the drive via PATA cable.
 
it could also be other devices on the USB hub

I do sometimes get ahead of myself, Ice Czar. I sometimes assume (and we all know what means) the obvious. IMHO we always unplug all drives we are not working on, because of lateral corruption.

6 months ago after spending a whole day rescuing a horribly infected box
which I finally defeated (new Cool Web Search Trojan)
I all of a sudden dont have the ntldr any more and it refuses to boot
sleep deprived and under a deadline I reformat, only to find the floppy :p

Its the simple shit that makes us into raving idiots
 
ah.....well, a friends desktop to test the drive then
as mentioned the drivers are the leading suspect
and cables can go south, as can external drives especially 3.5" form factor internals they arent nearly as robust as say the 2.5" laptop drive you have
point is that you need to start culling down the suspects
by testing the drive and it passing youd know it either the drivers or the physical interface
by replacing the drivers or having the external w\ that cable work in another box that points to your drivers

replacing your drivers and testing the Hard drive plus swapping out the cable points to the IDE to USB bridge in thye enclosure

swatcat, the drive may show up, but does it show up as "Online"?

If you need to get the data off the drive, then connect it internally, but otherwise, make sure that you have initialized the disk through Disk Management.
