I want to know if playing quicktime movies, avi files will be slower on external usb 2.0 drives vs internal drives.

I know the transfer rates and all that stuff, but just want to know if playing movies will be choppy on external drive or exact same as internal drive.

I've played small movies and mp3's from an external without too many problems, but I can feel the hesitation when looking through directories or opening the file. I haven't tried playing back a larger file like a DVD rip from an external yet.

I just ran hd tach and my maxtor external got 35 mb... my internal raptor got 65 mb.

I was thinking of getting a hitachi sata 2 250gb drive. But my computer only supports sata 150. Then I was thinking of getting sata enclosure and hooking it up via sata externally.

Is it worth it to do this? How much of a boost will sata 150 drive get me?
