Hello,

I have a Maxtor 6Y080L0130413 which is failed a friend gave me in the hopes I could get some data off of it. It seems to beep an annoying tone several times when you power it up. Googling around, I got the impression this means the drive head is stuck to the platter and the tone is some method the drive uses to vibrate the head free. However, I have opened up the drive and both the spindle motor seems to spin and the read head seems to have its full range of motion. Here is a video of the drive powering up with the cover removed:

Any idea what the problem is here and how I might get the drive working long enough to recover some data?

Thanks for reading!

You opened the drive, so you might as well toss it now.

Not necessarily... Just for kicks and grins, I removed the cover from a 20GB Samsung HDD at work one day and booted a PC with it. It booted fine and I was able to use the PC, all the while watching the platter spin and the head move around. It was pretty neat. Obviously, the destructive part of me emerged and I couldn't resist tapping the spinning platter with the tip of a screwdriver. Instant BSOD. :)

All I'm saying is, the drive isn't trashed just because he opened it up. If he can somehow manage to get it to the point where he can see the data, he can probably pull the data off of it unless some debris landed on the platter while it was exposed.

I did the work in my clean room by which I mean bathroom so I suspect/hope the drive will be uncontaminated. Studying the video, it looks like the noise is generated when the read head is at the beginning of the drive (or closest to the spindle motor). I would guess one of the read heads is touching the motor or perhaps the platter in that position. Has anyone encountered this noise before and fixed it?? I would really like some confirmation before I go out buying tools to replace Maxtor read heads :D
