Ok. So just what the hell did this thing decide to do to me?

I was in the middle of playing D3:resurrection last night, when a small fireball flew out from under my hard drive and disintegrated at the bottom of my case. My power supply obviously sensed the power fluctuation and the whole system shut down accordingly. After looking at my hard drive, not to mention smelling that long lasting and horrible smell of fried IC's, I could see the IC that burnt up.

What sucks is that Maxtor doesn't cover "energy fluctuations" on their warranty and I just bought the thing about 4 months ago. DOH!

I am trying to figure out if my power supply or the hard drive are to blame. Anyone ever have this happen to them before??

I am using a PC Power&Cooling 510 SLI, Asus A8N-E, Athlon 3800+, Powercolor X850Xt,
Maxtor Diamondmax 10 300Gb (correction, I was using this hard drive), creative Audigy 2 ZS, Plextor Px716A.

I DO NOT overclock, which sucks because I was really starting to feel comfortable about trying some minor OC'ing before this happened! I was just like...WTF??!!

Well I don't think the PSU is to blame or you would have other problems. Bad PSU's do wierd things to a computer. I would try and RMA the thing anyway. Most of the time the manufacture just sends you a new one, I have never had one been denied. I have sent several hard drives back to Maxtor for customers since they didn't want to mess with the rma process.

Try it and see. May get a new drive, may have to buy a new one. If you have a CC do the advanced rma, that way you can get your system back up and running quicker.

I would RMA that thing in a heart beat
 
Or you could go buy a used/bad one from a local store, must be same make/model, and swap out the PCBs. That might work.

But yea RMA is the best/quickest way to get it done right. More than likely they will either replace the PCB, or send you a new HDD.

This was the line from the warranty page that I thought might cause an issue:

"Unusual physical or electrical stress or power fluctuations"

Since the IC blew up, wouldn't Maxtor just say it was some electrical problem with my machine and not do a thing about it? Obviously there was some sort of 'electrical stress' for the chip to burn like it did. I hope that my PCP&C PSU didnt decide to crank up its 5V line suddenly for no apparent reason and cause a quick overvoltage to my SATA line. It happened really fast!

What really stinks more than anything is that the system was running great for a week now and very fast. Then this??!!!

I have RMA'ed the drive and shipping out today.

I'd RMA then quote the email saying "Its the fault of the best PSU you can buy". If they do decide to send it back just to screw you.

well I don't know what caused it, but you have one of the best PSUs available, and have no problems with anything else, so I'm inclined to think its a problem with the hard drive
