i was given a maxtor 80 gig hdd, and was told it was dead. I wanted to check it out for myself. I put it in my rig as a slave. I formated it to NTFS. I ran check disk with both options selected (auto fix errors/scan for & attempt to recover bad sectors).

Check disk came out with no errors (it did run very very slow). Now, when I try to put stuff on that HDD, it either goes insanley slow, or just locks up.

Is there a program that will go through and do a read/write test and just mark the sectors bad so this drive will still be salvagable ?

thanks for any info.

i've heard of a program scaled spinrite. would that help me?

I just tried a speed test and came back with these results:

theoretical limit - 16.6
burst speed - 2.9
sustained speed - 0.0
