Hello;

Last week I bought a new 160 GB Hard Drive and installed it in my system (currently 2 WD 80 GB Drives installed) and when I turn on the computer the BIOS finds the drive. I booted into XP Professional with SP1 and it found the drive. I used Drive Managment and partitioned the drive, everything worked great... Then I shut down the computer and the next day I turned it on and as it booted I got an error about writting to the Q: drive (100 GB partition on the new drive) so I finnished booting into windows and started to troubleshoot the issue. I finally loaded the device manager and searched for new devices and boom it poped in. No problem I thought....Till it happened the next time I booted and the next time I booted....

So I can access the drive but only if I load the device manager and search for new devices?!?!? I ahve checked the data on the drive and everyhting is a ok, what the hell is going on???

I want to use the drive as my master in my new system but I am worried about this whole booting issue.

Anyone ever had this issue?

TIA
Krozet

diskmgmmt.msc gave me an error about not finding the program so I tried diskmgmt.msc :D

Basically the drive is not in the disk managment screen until I go to Control Panel > System > device manaer > scan for new hardware. Once I do that I can see the drive in the disk managment console....

Any other suggestions? This is a weird problem, in 8 years of building systems I have never seen the before.

OHH and its an ATA drive hooked to an Asus A7N8X-X MoBo with an XP 2600 CPU. I unplugged my Plextor 708 DVD Burner to put the new drive in, just to prep it for its new home in an Abit IC7G P4 system.

so I did some switching in my system. I set the 160 as primary slave and it started to work fine. I plugged my Plextor back in and now the system crashes everytime windows pops up with that little bubble that it has found new hardware...its there just long enough to see that it found the Plextor and then it resets.... WTF?!?! I am on the verge of a reinstall!

Sounds to me that you might not have the drive's Master/Slave configurations set right...

They are set to Cable Select and the BIOS see's them right where I need them to be. I thought of this too and played with the cables, right now the burner is on its own cable and still seems to cause the EXACT same issue...Windows boots, bubble pops up with the 'Found new hardware' and crashes....You dont suppose it is having a problem with INCD? I think i am going to go boot without the burner and uninstall INCD and see what happens.

Thanks for the input Fabricio.
