I was looking to get away from Chrome because the Google machine is growing too large for my taste. Is Maxthon safe or would I be jumping into the fire so to speak?

Any other browsers that don't phone home that you would recommend?

All browsers phone home in some sense.

If you're comfortable with Chrome, it has a privacy section in the settings. Disable everything there and change the omnibars default search engine if you're looking to make Chrome a little less Googlefied.

I don't trust Maxthon because it is made in China. If you really like Chrome you could always try Chromium.
I prefer Opera, mainly because of the UI.

Ummm so don't trust China? But Google is ok?

Google is a company trying to make money by selling information.

China is country trying to steal information to launch cyber attack.

Which would you trust more?

Exactly. Also I never said I trust google. Chromium is the open source version of chrome and you can examine the code, remove anything you want, and compile it yourself.

if you guys are that worried I know firefox is pretty good mobile wise.
