Hello gang.

I'm thinking about picking up a 300gb Maxtor Maxline III sata drive. I noticed, however, that some resellers are marking theirs as the Maxline III "plus"

I can't seem to find any information on the existence of a plus line for the Maxline III though? Does this even exist; what's the difference?

Also: I'm debating whether or not to add a 74gb Raptor as the primary drive...or perhaps wait on it a bit for an updated (rumored 146gb NCQ SATA2) raptor to come out...hmm...

Thanks for any info.

Some more background on the "Plus" moniker on Maxtor drives - it is a throwback to the era when Maxtor offered DiamondMax and MaxLine drives in both 5400 and 7200RPM. The DiamondMax 9 and MaxLine II were available with both spindle speeds - 7200RPM drives were labelled with "Plus" to dffierentiate them from their 5400RPM cousins. Now that the DiamondMax and MaxLine are on exclusively 7200RPM, there is no need to designate them as Plus. All DM10s and MLIIIs are 7200RPM drives.

which is better? the d10 or maxline III? as far as data transfer and read times are concerned.

Same drive, firmware, performance. Maxtor uses, in theory, higher quality components and tighter tolerances during assembly to justify the five year warranty on MaxLines, but the reality is that there is little to no difference between them. There's a price difference of less than $5 between DM and ML on ZZF, at least for the 250GB (which is the capacity point that I follow pricing on pretty religiously :p)

There's no difference in performance beyond a reasonable margin of error, but the MaXLine drives are more robust. Designed for 24/7 sustained operation throughout their operating life, they are built with beefier components and sport 5 year warranties compared to the DM10's three year warranty.
