Anyone looking to pick up an LCD should check out the May 2004 issue of MaximumPC. Inredible issue with tons of stuff but they did a gamers LCD roundup useing most of the major competitors and it also has quite a bit of information on LCD's.

The candidates were:

NEC 1980SX
Kogi L9CH-TA
Viewsonic VP201s
Samsugn 172X *
Planar PL1700 *
Xerox XL795D
Dell 2001FP *
Benq FP767-12

* The only three that passed their tests and were recommended to be good gaming LCD's.

I was a bit curious about why the Viewsonic VP201s didn't make it as it has the same panel as the Dell 2001FP.

Here is their explanation.

At its native resolution of 1600x1200, the VP201s is spectacular; bright and crisp with nearly undetectable "ghosting" or blurring of images. Notch it down to 1280x1024, though, and everything onscreen looks as if it's been through a long, hard night. Additionally, the monitor setting default gave us annoying warning messages about using a non-optimal resolution. No kidding. If you're a single resolution family, by all means, enjoy the Viewsonic. Otherwise --- next!

Even though they use the same panel, the build quality may actually make a difference.

Also, I'm not totally sure - but it may utilize a different signal processing chip too.
 
Thanks alot for the post! I recently subscribed to Maximum PC but don't know if my subscription will be processed soon enough to get this issue (Subscriped back around Mar. 20). If not I will go buy it, anyway, does anyone have any more information on the Planar other than found in the magazine? I looked briefly for some reviews online but could find none. What is the difference between the Planar 1700 and the Planar 1700M? Any insight would be helpful as the monitor looks like it might suit my needs perfectly (going to college, need small, gaming ready, nice lcd for under $500). Thanks alot!

Nice to see even another review showing the Samsung 172X being a good gaming LCD.

Still loving mine...

Must say, I'm enjoying the Analog and DVI hookup at the same time. Nothing huge, but a nice feature. The 172X switches automatically between the two as needed.
