I have a Samsung SyncMaster 997DF and the maximum res I can get is 1600x1200. The owners manual also says max res is 1600x1200. If I get a better video card or go to SLI will I be able to increase the res? Could I go as high as 2048x1536?

Thanks!

No.
EDIT: sort of. but not in the way you want it. As in, you may be able to do it, but it'll make the screen move around with the mouse rather than the whole 2048x1536 pixels showing up.

Go by the manual, thats what its for. Ever notice older monitors that whig out at 1024x768? Not saying that yours would at that res, it's just not the best idea.

Doesn't hurt to try and see what happens, at most youll have to hit your escape key to back down to the previous res.

997DF has a hard limit of 1600x1200 though refresh can go to 85Hz IIRC. I may be off on the refresh, it's been a while since I looked.
To oversimplify GREATLY: Maximum resolution is a hard limit of the tube; just like LCDs. You can't make an LCD at 1:1 go above 1600x1200 if it's only got 19.2M pixels. That's all it's got. It can't split those pixels to give you 76.8M pixels. Same with CRTs.
