I have an AMD xp3000+ and I have oc'd it to 2.31 Ghz on 200fsb and 11.5 multiplier. I tried to kick up the multiplier to 12 because I would be happy with a 2.4 oc but the processor seems unstable. I was running at a vcore of 1.675 for the 2.31 oc. I boosted it up to 1.75 and I could make it through the loading screen but then when it tried to bring up the login screen it would reboot. I was afraid to push it any further on the vcore since I don't know what a safe voltage would be. It says on the amd site that +.5 is the max range without ruining much of the life of the processor...

I was wondering what would be the recommended max voltage I could try to get this thing to work. I can't really convince myself that anything at, or above, 2 volts would be ok given the max voltage thread that was posted a little while back.
 
I don't think anyone can give you a definitive answer to the best safe "max voltage" on any given CPU, because the data is lacking to prove exactly how much voltage decreases CPU life by XX months in that detail. I have never seen a CPU outright die just from higher voltages and frequencies as long as temperatures stayed well-controlled. However, on my own system (see sig below), it will no longer load WinXP at stock voltages and stock speeds after being overclocked for 2 months at 1.375 X 123% special voltage control which puts it at a little under 1.7V. Resetting BIOS and loading default settings with default voltages = blue screen, but as soon as I bump the voltage up, it's perfectly stable.

To me this is evidence that higher voltages DO have an objective impact on your CPU, but I doubt it is quantifiable as large variability exists between CPU's, how stable your power is, quality of capaciters on the mobo, quality of cooling, etc. However, with my limited experience of only overclocking my personal systems since the 486DX2 days which is maybe ~20-30 computers, I have never seen a CPU die with good temperatures, just permanently require more voltage at all speeds.
 
Well it's good to know I won't blow it up :) I know there is no set value for anyone, I was just looking for some insight.

What are some characteristics of a dead CPU?

I was just wondering if there was something special. If I press the power button on my computer and nothing happens I would probably think psu. I didn't know if a CPU would actually allow the computer to post or not if it didn't work since I have never had this happen.

you would most likely get a post error code out of it, unless the proc took the mobo with it.when i said failure to post, i meant to say the it would not complete post successfully.
