max temp

55-60 is getting a bit too hot for comfort. I think they're rated up to 65degrees though.

With above average cooling, 40-50 under load should be your max.
 
most dual core chips have a max cover temp of 65C (a few are 71C though).
The die temp can be hotter and still be in thermal spec. There is some thermal resistance between the core and the top of the heat spreader where max cover temp is measured, so the die can be a bit hotter.

60C is generally a pretty good rule of thumb, leaves room for sensors to be inaccurate, and gives tons of life span to chips. But voltage is just as bad for long (decades) term life of the chip, raising the voltage should corespond to lowering the max 'acceptable' temps.
