I tried looking at amd web site to find the max core temp allowed for the opteron 165 dual core sock 939 OSA165CDBOX. I tried also searching on google and people said ~70C is max. Anything under 65 is good and others said under 50C is good. I was wondering what is the max temp allowed for this cpu and whats a good range. So the hotter it is, less cpu life?

Most Operton's have a max temp ceiling of either 65º or 70º C and recommended operating temps of 35-40ºC. I've always found that voltage more than heat/temps kills cpus. Of course the less the better when it comes to both

it is on the AMD website for the max temperature on load= 65C
for voltage for opteron 165, it is 1.3 stock, voltage depends on what HSF u got, because ur temperature would limit you from adding more voltage. more voltage= more heat.
a good temperature is to keep it in the mid 40C in load.
i had my opty 165@2.5ghz at 1.392volts, my temps are 32C idle and 37-39C in full load, i have watercooling.

the more voltage u add, the lesser lifespan of the components. but u wouldn't be using it for the next 10 years right?

some people have their voltages at 1.6volts max, again the voltage depends on ur temperature.

People who say "Keep it 20 degrees under the quoted spec" are silly.

I have a laptop that has been running between 55-90C between 12-24 hours a day for the past 3 years which has yet to show any complaints. Keep it within the 65C spec and you are fine, end of story. Sure cooler is always better as it will provide better stability. But you wont be hurting your processor as long as you stay under the limit on the spec sheet.

Personally, i run a 148 and i have it only going up to around 45-46 under load at max. I have mine overclocked only to 2.7 right now, though i have gotten it to 3 with a huge uppage in voltage to over 1.6 at around 1.63ish from the stock 1.39, however, when i do that the temps spike up to 45C at idle. I just decided that even though im not gunna be using my processor for more than like the next 2-3 years tops, i just dont want my CPU raising my whole idle case temps to 95F from its usual 86F.

My Opteron 170 kicks ass @ 2.6GHz and around 50C full load max. Have a Scythe Ninja cooler on it with a 64CFM Scythe fan (was recommended on [H], thanks guys) It runs around 45-46C constantly otherwise as I run F@H on both cores.
