I've never built a real server before only normal computers that I operated as servers. I need to build another server at work but this time a real server. This server I guess could be used as a workstation as well but I'm going to try and keep from doing that. The server will at the moment be working with three workstations and eventually add in either a few tablet pc's or more desktop workstations.

This is the software that all of the workstations run and the server would have on it as well.

I know I could do a normal sized server but I don't know if there is any clear advantage between doing a normal sized server or matx server for what I'm running.
Now for what I was thinking of building and let me know what you think, or if I should change or if I should do a raid and get a raid card or what not. I also don't know if I would need to get windows server software or if I could run ubuntu or some other linux based os.

Memory any recommendations?
 
Yeah I don't want a dell, can't stand dell and every dell I have owned has always ended up being a high quality paper weight. Even if I did purchase the dell I still need bigger hard drives than what's in the configuration which bumps the price up if I have them install the hard drives otherwise I just have to buy hard drives myself.
 
Is that software cloud-based or installed on the server? If it is installed on the server, that may determine whether to get Windows or Linux, based simply upon what is supported.

If this server is only serving 3 hosts, with not that much growth expected (right?) I would steer clear from a dual socket board and save some extra coin in that respect. You could get a nice i7 or i5 system for much less, although not using a server board. It SHOULDN'T be an issue, but it could be something to pop up. Save quite a bit of money with better performance, though.

And I'm by no means a Dell fan boy (never owned a Dell product personally) but my company goes all Dell with the servers and has had nothing but good things to say about them. With these companies the corporate models (servers and such) are generally held to a much higher standard, so I just want to throw that out there as well.
 
I think I get what your saying by cloud based. The server has the program installed on it but doesn't need the program running, the server is used more as a data center than anything. When you log onto a workstation and run the impromed infinity software it requires you to choose where the server is so it communicates all the information there and nothing is saved on any of the workstations.

I tried to see if that program is compatible with Linux, but I couldn't find much. It looks like you have to contact them. I'm not sure how that program works but it may also depend on your current licensing agreement with that vendor. They may require you buy another license (unless you have to anyway), if it's going on another platform. (I deal a lot with physicians offices at my job, and a lot of them complain a LOT about EMR restrictions although I never know company or software names).

Yeah currently we have sql 2000 purchased through them and 6 licenses for the impromed infinity software as well as tech support for the program itself which includes all the updates for the program and back up software.

I guess I will have to give them a call tomorrow and find out somethings.
