Hey y'all. I was just curious if people prefer matte of glossy finish on their LCDS for gaming?

Recently I bought an Acer with a matte finish and just thought it was the best monitor I'd ever owned. Even more recently I upgraded a few inches and a few thousand pixels and I accidentally bought a glossy finish. I was surprised, and I think I prefer matter.

I reciently bought a new HD LCD TV with a glossy finish and I am glad I did, because I can see the fine details more clearly, but no way on a computer monitor. The difference is that you sit much closer to a monitor and who wants to look them self all of the time?

Not me

I like glossy. Matte has a coating that is uneven to break up the light and disperse it into the surface. There is still glare on matte - its just spread around the surface. The anti-glare coating makes small shadows due to the rough surface and thats why bright areas like blue skies look like they are being viewed through a dusty monitor.

I can always move the lights to avoid glare but I cant move a coarse coating off my monitor. Matte would be ok in a space where I couldn't control lights - maybe as in a large work area.

Gloss.
Theres been a number of threads on this, one last week I believe.

I have no preference. I've seen great and crappy looking screens with both.

I used to like glossy, but I'm currently set up near a window and it drives me nuts. It's like a mirror.

I have a glossy and matte LCD right next to each other. I like the matte a lot more.

It's a pain in the ass to keep the glossy clean (had it on my laptop). The dust will get under the panel for sure.

I have no problem controlling reflections, so I prefer glossy and the superior clarity of the image. I don't believe colors are effected that much by the clear coating, but black levels and contrast seem better.

Reflections are easy to deal with, unless you just have to put your screen acroos from a window and you require sunlight in the room. I have a floor lamp that sits about 5 ft. to the right side of my desk, and some good blinds to the side also, and reflections don't show from my position.

In any case, there will still be some glare with matte, just more diffused and a larger area.

I prefer glossy, though I currently have matte (HP LP2475w). My old glossy TN NEC 1770GX was actually better in these lighting conditions, because the sun's glare is dispersed over the matte screen and makes everything harder to see. I can still see shadows, but now they're blurry shadows.

Glossy! That way, when the computer acts up..I can give it an angry face and see my reflection, and then bask in it's glory and give out a mighty roar, just like King Leonidas of the brave 300!

OMG! Most original thread evar!

Matte except mabey for movies.. in a dark room with nothing for it to reflect off of.

I am a photographer.... reflections &*$@# with my editing. I feel the matte of my NEC 2490 is much nicer than the imac 24 inch..

Well, I think in case of monitors this "matte vs. glossy" is not a big issue. There are enough of each type, so one can take whatever he/she likes.

But notebooks are another case. It is rather paradox, that in case of notebooks, where you want to use it in various conditions, when traveling etc., that in that case the glossy plague is spreading. Luckilly there are still some brands offering matte displays :)

True.

And in stores you can barely find any matte laptops, glossy sure looks more attracting - until you put some thought in it or start use it.
I will never ever buy a glossy display if I have a choice.
