Mathematica and MATLAB - CUDA

I've been thinking about purchasing a PC for a while, and I've been trying to figure out the merits of the video card. I'd do some slight gaming to it (minimal), but I was wondering if I intend to be using Monte Carlo Analysis, significant amounts of regression testing, financial simulations, Excel heavy VBAs, market data, tick by tick series does it make sense for a workstation graphics card to be used here?

I can't find out if Mathematica and MATLAB uses the graphic cards enough. I've seen some of the QUADDROs and how many of the gaming cards today do support some type of CUDA programming, but I don't know what type of graphics card to get. Would Mathematica and MATLAB be useful for workstation graphic cards, or should I just get a high end graphics gaming card that supports CUDA programming and hope for the best?

As far as I know, which may not be much, MATLAB can use cuda, but you might need the parallel toolbox to make use of it.

In any case, the use of a cuda capable video card only requires a gaming card. I would NOT spend the money they want for the QUADDROs as I don't even think you will be any benefit over the regular gaming card for cuda apps.

The cuda specific cards to have a double advantage over the gaming cards. The full cuda cards will take something like a 1/8 performance hit over a float where as the gaming cards will take a 1/12th hit.

Likely you would see a nice performance boost with either. Also, for example on your monte carlo sims you can use regular floats to get a set of candidate points (getting with the accuracy of a float) and then just test each candidate point directly....or something along those lines.

You might need to get creative, but you are smart enough to figure that out.
 
Thanks - Right now, I'm leaning toward a high-end gaming graphics card that supports CUDA (anything is cheaper than paying 4k out of the box).

Wanted to be really make sure I'm not losing out something on the workstations gfx cards that had immense benefits to MATLAB/Mathematica. From the looks of it, workstations are undisputed kings for CAD, design, etc, but in the maths -- it was a little less obvious.

Since I'll be using Mathematica heavy in the future (I've used it a few times a few years ago) I wanted to have something that would run "fast" enough for large sets of simulations + last.

I would wait until you are actually using mathematica and need the video card so you can be sure to buy the latest generation hardware....

I think Kepler (is that the right name) will be out before too long, and it should be an improvement....so if you can wait, I certainly would. Or get something like a gtx460 in the interim...just my opinion.
