I'm not sure exactly what to use, so I'm looking for material types that might work. Basically I want to have some kind of rubbery feel that can be applied as an exterior layer or a total layer to the exterior of a case. It needs to be fairly flexible though - I want to paint it (acrylics perhaps?).

I was considering putting a layer of foam below it so I can mold a shape around my case, then having some kind of liquid plastic or latex layer on top of that which can be painted or sprayed on, then painting that.

I'm not sure what to look for though. Liquid plastics, latex, rubber, something silicone based I assume? Is there any good type and/or brand that's good for this kind of modding?
 
maybe use crack filler, and smooth it out, then paint it, it's also pretty squishy
 
Liquid latex could work - stuff I've used comes in 2 bottles, one of the latex itself & another for the chemical that hardens it - so you can control how fast/hard it sets by how much of the second bottle you add in.
 
Tool dip might work, though it's too flexible to paint. It comes in several colours. Tool dip is used to dip the handles of things like pliers to coat them.

You can also check at local art shops. They usually have different kinds of casting plastics from polyester resin (as in making fiberglass) or acrylic resin (clear casting) to various kinds of rubbery materials.

If you want a creepy case, skin-coloured silicone rubber stuff is available from places that supply film/TV special effects technicians. This is soft and kinda skin like and is used to make fake body parts. Add a little blood coloured plastic and you've got the ultimate Hallowe'en case :cool:
 
I've used this stuff on a few projects and seems to work fairly well, (though I haven't tried to paint it as of yet,) though it does come in a few different color choices, Site. If you go with this stuff though be sure to use real thin coats and give a decent dry time to it, otherwise it will just peal off in chuncks.
