How important is it to match the aspect ratio of the display of a computer with that of an external display? Thank you.

Depends entirely on what you're displaying and at what resolution. If you set up a TV for a cloned display, then it'll have to run at the same res. For dual monitor, it's entirely independent (one could be at 1920x1200, and the TV at 720p. Then it's up to your source.

Keep in mind that DVD/media player software always scales to the proper aspect ratio of the source and even then you can usually override it. For most all movies, it's usually 2.35:1, or 16:9.

My plan is to connect a 2nd monitor to my Mac for image processing. The two monitors will be connected in the "extended desktop" mode. Thus, I can keep my tools & palettes on one screen & the image to be processed on the other. Thus, it seems like it would be irrelevant if the 2 monitors had different aspect ratios (i.e. native resolutions)?

Is my thinking correct?
