Matched kits

Strictly speaking, all a matched pair/kit means is that the modules were tested together to ensure they work in dual or triple channel... at least to the best of my knowledge. 9 times out of 10 you wont have a problem mixing and matching (ymmv). As long as they are the same model (same specs), you shouldn't have any trouble running dual/triple channel.

So, yes. You should be able to buy 2 of the 2 x 4gb kits and use 3 for tripple channel without much issue.
 
I have two sets of the same brand ram with one pair having a higher speed and they get along fine. The faster set just runs at the same speed as the slower pair.
 
I want 24gb total on my i7.

If we buy 3 sets of 8gb (4+4gb), and they aren't compatible in triple channel mode for whatever reason, can we return the memory and get a full refund? It's a lot cheaper than buying 2 sets of 12gb (4+4+4gb) - what a ripoff :( an even bigger ripoff is the 24gb set (4+4+4+4+4+4).

Depends on the retailer. Check the return/refund policy. But I don't see a reason why getting 3 matching sets of 2 x 4gb DDR3 wouldn't work in tripple channel. You should be fine.

Yeah I checked with the manufacturer (GSkill), they said that if it's incompatible, that's tough luck for me and I can't return it to them or swap them, even if it's straight away. Pretty bad after-sales service if you ask me.

And there's no way I would pay newegg 15% restocking fee for restocking a piece of RAM!

GSkill then promptly recommended me to buy their 6x4gb kit, which costs $600 USD. That's double the cost of getting 3 sets of 2x4gb, for exact same RAM (GSkill Ripjaws 1600mhz). Does GSkill think I'm stupid?
 
It is the same ram but these are ones that are tested further and guaranteed to all work together. They should cost more. I am not sure about 2 times the price however. I would just take the chance and pay the 15% if you can not get it to work.

Honestly, it's probably worth the risk given the amount of money you would be saving. Especially considering that most likely you won't have any issues (other than normal ram issues like DOA, in which case you can RMA). And yes. They do think you are stupid. It's just the company line to suggest the much more expensive 6 x 4gb kit for the simple fact that it nets them more profit. They use the "tested for tripple channel use" tagline to justify a grossly inflated price, knowing full well that it's basically just a guarantee that their ram works like it should in the first place (since all DDR3 is designed for use in a triple channel setup). They know unmatched (read: untested) ram works just as well in most cases. It's kind of like an auto dealership charging the customer twice the price just for making sure the engine works at the same time as the headlights.

Also, I thought Newegg only charged restocking fees if you are getting a refund? So if that's true, and you exchanged it for the matched kit, you should avoid the fee... but don't quote me on that. Anyone have any experience dealing with ram exchanges @ Newegg?
 
Yeah I think I'm going to take a risk and go for separate smaller kits, so much cheaper that way.

I don't know about Newegg exchange but it still costs money to send the RAM back to them...
