So i currently use a 17in 1289x768, but I plan to get something in the 20ish in range soon. What would be a good card to match a larger monitor?

Not really that large of a dispaly, it'll probably have a rez around 1600x1200 or 1680x1050 (ofcourse there are the 20" odd balls out there with higher). I'd say any current 512mb card would be more then capable, as far as speeds and IQ that's gonna be up to your price range..

But do you really wanna spend a couple hundred bucks on a card now? Or let the next-gen path develop into the market?

Well, if you game... I'd really consider going for an 8800GTS

at that resolution the extra muscle will come in really helpful!

def would be 1689x1050. i like widescreen

Buying a last gen card now would be kind of a waste of money unless you can find a really cheap 7950gx2 or a X1950XTX on sale somewhere as you will kind of just be tossing the money into a pit.

The 8800's are total speed demons even in DX9 territory in comparison to the older video cards.

X1950XT or the XTX would be your best bet then... still not the best idea IMO.
i dont plan to upgrade again until the summer at least, so it wont be replaced right away. depends on the cash flow, in college it can be spikey

No. Memory does not a fast card make. There are 512MB X1300's, which won't give you that great a gaming experience, especially not at anything above 1024x768. I am not sure what you mean here, but a 17" LCD should have a native resolution of 1280x1024 At resolutions of 1600x1200, a 6800Ultra would struggle with some modern games. Therefore a lower end card wouldn't work too well for that given purpose. Basically, your statement is incorrect. Not just any 512MB card will do.

the 17 in is what i have now, getting a ~20 in soon

Check out a 1950Pro... they are really cheap (and price will probably drop once more Dx10 cards are out) Also has a 80nm process... and native crossfire... what's your budget?

At the risk of possible hijack, how bout posing the question a bit differently.

I'm currently using a 19" CRT at 1280x1024. My next upgrade is a 20" ws LCD, 1680x1050. Should be here next week.

AM2 X2 3800+ @2400 1.385v
267mhz x 9, 4x HT (HT link 1068 per CPU-Z)
Corsair XMS2 DDR2 800 @ DDR2 667 5-5-5-15 (effective 800 according to CPU-Z)-1.95v
Stock HS and fan (Sandra showed max temp 52C, average 47C)
OCZ Powerstream 520
eVGA 7600 GT KO
Xfi extreme Music
Seagate 7200.10 250 Gb
Thermaltake Armor Jr.

I don't plan on upgrading my video card until Feb. or March, waiting to see how things shake out with R600 vs G80, pricing and possible refreshes.

How much of a hit on performance will I see in FEAR, BF2, BF-2142?

Going to a widescreen or letterbox LCD?

If you're going widescreen, a 20" screen with a 7600 wont be that fast... Medium/low settings at native res at a playable framerate should be possible in games like oblivion (read, no grass).

Here's an idea, grab a eVGA 7600 series card. A lot of them are on rebate on newegg to about $100 and Circuit City will have them at about $90 on black friday. Then after the ATI R600 and the 8800 revisions along with the price drops happen around Febuary, you can use eVGA's awesome step up program to save about $100 off the latest DX10 cards AND a few months from then, the new Intel Bearlake chipset will be out.

That sounds like a plan for you. :-D

From the original statement..

[snip..]as far as speeds and IQ that's gonna be up to your price range..

I said nothing about the memory size, bandwidth, core clock, memroty type, api support, architecture or interface being directly or indirectly related to performance and/or Image Quality.

The OP asked to match a video card with a Monitor, not a video card to performance or Image quality. I added the rest in that statement to clarify that sentiment. I certainly wouldn't buy a 512mb card for anything below 1280x720 and I certainly wouldn't use a 256mb card on anything over 1920x1200. Thx for the further clarification on my post, but I'm sure the OP could have used your 'expertise' more relative to his query.

From your post, it would seem you don't recommend memory @ 512mb? So should he go with 256mb, 768mb, or 1024mb?
