Well the only benchmark I've seen was from a review on some Chinese site. I'm waiting to hear the whole story on these things from more reliable sources, as well as a subjective evaluation of what they're like compared to the core 2s, given the same clock speed.
Even if clock for clock they don't outperform core2's in games, I think a 3ghz q6600 will be squashed by a 3.2ghz i7 when that is overclocked. I can't imagine my TF2 framerates not benefiting... Or any other CPU limited game for that matter. I'm not comparing apples to apples, I'm comparing what I have now to what I would haave after a large expenditure of money.
 
I saw a live interview with one of Intel's i7 architects and he said that if you are a gamer or an overclocking enthusiast you are going to want an i7 CPU.

nuff said.
 
Something else to throw into the mix. People keep mentioning hl1 and tf2, how many people use a monitor that has more than a 60hz refresh :p Who cares if your machine can spit out 400 fps when the monitor can only display 60.
 
I'm not after huge fps in tf2, just improvement in performance so that I don't drop into the 20s/30s.
 
Sup Com and Source see improvements going from 2 threaded duals to 4 threaded quads. But will they gain much going from 4 threads to i7's 8? That is the question for those who upgrade with just gaming in mind.

I'm coming from a P4 system and right now I see myself buying a 9550 E0 in December.

Funny, or maybe I should say sad, thing is those "Chinese sites" tend to be a more reliable source of tech news than those "English sites". I dont even know if I can even recall a Chinese leaked story that turned out to be fud. Wish I could say the same about English/Western sites leaked news...
 
Who in here thinks that we need more multithreaded apps? I think we need to start simplifying it and have more programs that are based off of stream processing. I don't see too much of a speed increase in future processors in a the next year are two. What I do see is more bandwidth and multitasking. That is it.
 
What they need is RHT. If they ever made something like that then all of our problems would go "poof" overnight. Or at least until we got over the new car smell and realized that apps are still horrible slow and poorly written to take advantage of the latest and the greatest in tech advancement.

Well newer games, such as Crysis and Crysis: Warhead are designed to take advantage of the extra cores. For example, in a dual core system it would run all the physics on the 2nd core, while everything else, like you said, was running on core 1.

Anyone also know exactly when nehalem is coming out? I read a while ago it was supposed to be the end of september/early october and i've put my new build off for it, but i haven't heard anything since.

i'm with keeping my current system and spending my hard earned dough on a new GFX before i even consider going to Core i7, although nothing is stopping me from grabbing some new Core i7 Xeons to replace some of our older office servers :)

Yeah you have a very nice system there, except the old videocard. Instead of wasting on new i7, I say go for either a GTX-280 for $399, or splurge on a 4870x2 if you can, but only if you have a big monitor like 1920x1200 or 2560x1600
 
I would play the wait and see game. I am going that as of right now.

What we need for that to work is the ability to see into the future. Otherwise one core will always end up stalled waiting for an operand from the other core.

Totally serious. Until these new chips are actually available and people have seen what they can actually do with games any info out at the moment is just speculation, and I'm sorry but canned benchmarks from pre released chips do not mean squat.

Even if i7 gaming performance was incredible. doesn't matter. PC gaming is mostly mmorpgs now, 15+ million people are invested in an mmorpg, sims, counterstrike, and won't care to upgrade. Developers see this and are either catering toward mmorpgs or console development. The work required to truly take advantage of even todays CPUs and video cards is not happening.

WoW is CPU, not GPU limited...FYI ;)
 
WoW is Blizzard keeping their servers running limited. WoW has more external (outside of our control) limiting factors, than factors that are within your control. At least when I played. Maybe things have changed, highly doubt it though.

But i7 is clearly built and meant for the server/supercomputer/SkyNet department. Many of the latest and greatest games can be run with last generations cpu, let alone the current generation or the next generation of cpu. So why on Earth would Intel try to go "Zomg guys lets make i7 super leet for games!!!1111one!!!"?

It's nice to try and run physics on one core, but that would only work if you were calculating physics just for kicks.
In an actual game, the physics affect movement of objects, characters, and in some ways AI (which eventually all ends up rendered, so graphics aswell).
So if one core is doing physics, and the other core is doing the other things, the second core will have to wait on the first.

Simple example of why multithreading basically doesn't really work in a game. I find it strange that most people still make such claims like "oh, just run this on one core, and run that on the other". If you bother to just give a LITTLE thought to the impact that would have, you would arrive at the above scenario no doubt.
