Massive PPD increase???

From what I'm reading this is what is needed:

1) Vista 64 (any version, apparently) or (in some cases) Win 7
2) GTX 2XX card (although lesser cards also show some improvement)
3) 1680-point units, although some are reporting a slight improvement for others
4) GeForce 185.20 (which is actually a leaked beta version).

If you meet the four criteria and have ONE card folding you should see a huge increase in PPD - like 100% or so. Other cards will also see an improvement, but not a "doubling". It doesn't scale so well in multi-card systems, but it still offers an improvement.

I've seen a slight increase on my 8800GTX on Vista (from 5K to 7K PPD) and a 25% increase on my 3 x GTX 260s (from 23-24K to 29030K). My folding rig hasn't changed at all (it is XP) but it seems my next purchase will be Vista 64.

Before I run out and plunk down $90 at Newegg for the cheapest Vista 64 (Home OEM) I'm wondering about the improvement in multi-GPU systems. One buddy said his 9800GX2 went from about 10K to 15K - with all the improvement on one GPU only. If this would scale across three cards then a 15K PPD improvement is worth $90. If it only works for one card then I'm probably better off with my original plan of an additional 9800GX2.

Any multi-GPU users out there want to comment on what they've seen?
 
So now that a whole protein has finished, this is what I'm seeing:
1)It is very jumpy as per the ppd, but lets say my averages were 12000 for gpu0 and 7000 for gpu1
2)Upon completing its first protein, gpu0 started downloading and opening a new one. At this time, gpu1's production ramped up.
3) As of now, gpu0 is at 10% and 7368ppd, gpu1 is at 81% and 13316ppd.

To me, this means for whatever reason only one card can benefit from this boost at a time. The initial two proteins were both 5902, the new one on gpu0 is 5903. All proteins have been for 1680 points.

*edit* now that gpu1 finished up its protein, gpu0 stole the speed again. Currently at 13440ppd and 7888ppd. So weird.

It also works on Windows server 2008 64bit. I gained 6k ppd on my gtx 260 216.

Good summary. I'll report back tomorrow when i load vista 64bit on my folding rig. I also have to run out and grab some 75ohm resistors. This is exciting! I do hope it's legit, we'll find out tomorrow.

Edit: The gain seems to be an increase of 40% of your current ppd on the first card. The reason the higher end cards are seeing more of a gain is because they initial ppd was higher. ie 8800gt people are seeing there score go from 4500 ppd to 7300 ppd while 260gtx people are seeing it go from 8000ppd to 14000 ppd *at least for me*.
 
Well, for my GTX 295, Im seeing double the performance on the first core, and about 2k more on the second. I went from around 15k to 26k with these new drivers.
 
How come there is such a massive increase just cause u fold in Vista i dont get it ?
 
I got some increase however was watching some TV last night so I wasn't able to watch my production much. It is an increase on my real stats not FAHMon I am interested in. We will see over the next couple days what happens there.

Before anyone goes out to spend money based on this, I urge everyone to take a moment and just see what happens. Hopefully Vijay can comment some time today on the validity of the science that comes from these drivers. I would hate anyone to buy a new card or pick up a copy of Vista and then find out that the science completed is invalid.
 
Huh, I'm seeing a pretty decent bump on my two NVIDIA rigs (GTX 280 and 8800GT), but nothing huge like you guys are reporting.

My GTX 280 went from around 8400 to 9600 and my 8800GT went from about 4800 to 6600.

Am I correct in that you can still NOT fold on Vista if you are using 3x9800GX2? If 2x 9800GX2's still the maximum?

I always get 'em from Radio Shack. They sell little cardboard packages of 5, typically a $ or 2.
 
Well on my main rig, I can report a jump from ~8.3K to ~14.4K on GPU1 and slight increases on the other two GPUs. Temps seem to be pretty good. Mine didn't go down much, but I'm WC'd and at load they are only 45 degrees anyway.

Hmm, so for those of you who are seeing the crazy big jump in PPD, where did you get the driver? I got mine from guru3d. I'm wondering if some of the drivers sourced elsewhere might have some interesting tweaks going on.
 
My clients have dropped like rocks now, on the same units as above, they are down to 8960ppd and 6978ppd. That's at 32% and 19% progress, respectively. I've noticed the work seems to be in bursts, instead of a constant as before. It's spiking, and then dropping, once per second each - I am verifying this by the whine sound the cards make, and my UPS reporting my wattage usage as a regular pulse. I have no idea what is going on, this seems really weird.

That seems to be the normal operation of WUs that use the new Core14.

Yes, you only need one dummy plug per card, regardless of how many outputs the card has. You only need a dummy plug for cards that aren't attached to a monitor (and your KVM counts as a monitor).

I think a driver is driver is a driver, so they're all the same no matter where you get them. but I could be wrong.

Try this for WHQL certified 185 driver for Vista 64.

I installed it and seems to run pretty much exactly the same as 185.20 (with the bump in PPD on GPUs).The only odd thing was that all my desktop shortcut icons disappeared - simple matter to get them back, but still odd.
 
I have a 3x 9800GT rig. I installed the 185.20's and my first GPU gained 2,000 ppd for a total of ~6,000ppd. The other two cards are unchanged around 4,000-4,500ppd depending on WU fluctuations. This sounds just like what others are reporting for this type of setup so it seems there is a pattern. Anyone else?
 
Woot finally had the right WU kick over i guess my 295 is putting out 18k ppd right now :D I don't really want to but i might be migrating my main folding box over to vista.

Well, it's a leaked driver and they're not exactly coming out of an NVIDIA package, so it would be really easy for someone to put in their own tweaks, swap out files, etc. They probably are all the same, but just throwing out a theory.
 
I'll be performing tests next week to find optimal ppd on various platforms and system types (I>E> htpc,dedicated folder,daily use).

Will post results here as well as creating a thread on OCN. My goal is still to skip Vista so this should not cloud my judgment but That is my disclaimer! ;)

It will only work in vista (the big bump). If you load the beta drivers in Win7 you get a BSOD when the computer tries to load the desktop. At least this is what happened to me.
 
Well I am uninstalling. Totally unstable (random reboots) and the point boost has been eratic. In addition, the points boost seems to only be on the first GPU and the subsequent GPUs are taking a hit. This is especially true if I got a 353, 420 or 511 point WU.

I was getting 3500 PpD on my third GTX285 and that just isn't acceptable at all. This is with the Shaders OC'd to 1800. At 1800 it was rock solid stable on 182.08.

I'll be looking at modding the inf as well as som supposed whql's that may work.

:( bummer, these are the reason that everything needs to be tested before everyone goes hog wild.

Yep, I got home today to a bsod from the nv driver. Overclock was 100% stable for weeks of folding and gaming on 181.22, going back to those. The sudden increase doesn't seem to be worth it for multi gpu setups anyway, I've seen it settle at 9000/5400 for a good period of time, and thats actually worse than the solid 7500/7500 I usually get,albeit by just a bit. Stability is more important to me so bye bye new drivers.
 
Saw OctoBox had hard locked after installing these last night. WinXP64, 4 x 9800GX2. Had been up and stable for a couple of weeks. My gaming rig (Vista 64 and 2 x 280 GTX) is staying up and running since upgrading last night (knock on wood). I'm going back to the 182s on OctoBox.



 
I happened to have one box running Vista x64 with a single GTX 285. I installed the beta drivers and I'm seeing 9300-9800 PPD from a 1680 point work unit. Before that I had a 420 pointer that was giving around 8600-8800 PPD (I don't remember exactly). So, it looks like you get a nice boost if you happen to have the right hardware/software combo. I'll probably avoid it on my other boxen based on the previous posts.
 
I also had a bad experience with these new drivers. I installed on 3 boxen and my main rig has had 2 bsod already. I need stability and will give back the extra ppd. What's that they say about too good to be true.....
 
Looks like Stanford is questioning this "improvement" and a lot of folders are fed up with any kind of BSOD, which has been happening fairly frequently.

BTW, the massive PPD increase seen across most of the top teams recently was not only attributable to the beta nVidia drivers. Much of the surge was also a result of the P3798 WUs released for several days straight to uniprocessor clients coincident with the big spike in production. These server test WUs deliver roughly 1200-1400 PPD per core of a modern CPU....
 
is it just me or is PPD back to normal production?
The production has lowered but it still looks a bit higher than normal. That's what I was saying in my post above. Not all of the production spike this week occurred because of the beta drivers. I had an upsurge as well and didn't touch my drivers. I don't even run Vista at all on my GPU systems, so there was more going on than GPU.
