Massive PPD increase???

It looks like they are reporting a large increase in PPD if you are running Vista 64 bit (and maybe Windows 7) and Nvidia drivers 185.20 the new work units and certain cards.

I mean, you have to have a pretty specific setup, but they are talking about doubling PPD.

I might have to try this tonight. I am running 64 ultimate and a GTX 260.

Thanks for the heads up.

Yeah, was just talking about this on another forum.

I havn't changed anything about my setup but I've had increasing daily totals for the past five days now. Pretty sweet! Looks like Stanford got the points/time balance right this time (please let me never see another 511-pointer again!)

Edit - but certainly not double! THAT would be awesome. I think it is mostly the 1680-pointers. My second rig has 1 x SMP and 3x 260 GTX and is running about 23K PPD, which is a few thousand points higher than normal.

Go get yourself some GeForce ForceWare 185.20 drivers!

edit:

wait --- don't do it! instability, BSOD's & random rebooting. Only do this if you feel lucky.

Do you feel lucky, punk?

I am just wondering if this will help my GTX 260. I will report on that tonight I guess.

I will be reinstalling first thing when I get home tonight.

I just installed 185.20 on my first rig - PPD on 3x 260 now at 28.6K.
The first GPU is actually showing 12KPPD! That is just amazing. I'm gonna run downstairs immediately and put 185.20 on my folding rig.

FYI - OCN site is down.

Has anyone noticed an increase in GPU temps to correspond with the PPD increase?

I wonder if these drivers will benefit other CUDA apps. A boost in SETI and GPUGrid maybe?

I'll give it a shot on one rig, can't hurt to try it.

OK, I'm pulling out an old HDD and I'll install windows 7-64 on the rig with 2x GTX260 cards. Lets see what this can do.

Has anyone noticed an increase in GPU temps to correspond with the PPD increase?

Mine are at 55, 47 and 52. About right, perhaps even a bit cool.

Just wondering about this PPD increase. Is it legit? Or is it a function of the variable nature of how the latest projects use the cards? I'd read on the FAH forums that these latest projects will speed up and slow down, so your FAHMON will show very different PPD numbers, depending on where the client is in the process.

Looks like we're getting blasted at OCN right now. Anyone got a link to WIN7 Beta? Looks like I'm gonna have to go 64bit on my dedicated rigs. :(

Well At least I got to skip vista! ;)

It seems from reading (almost) all 22 pages of the thead at OCN, this is the real deal - the workunits are completed much faster - so the only question that remains is are the workunits being folded properly? is the model somehow disrupted?

I have a feeling it isn't, but it is a possiblity. Time will tell. Boost your PPD!!!

If you have Vista / Win7 64, these drivers will make you happy.

XP 32 = no difference, from my tests.
XP 64 = still unknown - anyone still run that POS? ;-)

edit: 10,000PPD on my 9800GX2 - FROM ONE GPU! ;)

WOW, That is huge!

I haven't noticed any difference using XP on my folding box, but DAMN! I may have to run out and buy Vista.

That's about double normal values!

Edit - starting to have my doubts - My Vista 64 box is still reporting nearly 30K PPD with 3 x GTX 260, up from C. 21-23K before, but whereas before GPU1 was 12.7K now it is down to 7.8 and GPU3 is up to 12.8. This is starting to sound like the reports from Stanford about Core 14 and the new WUs wildly varying use of the GPU over the course of the WU. For a little while FAHMON will report huge daily PPD, but then fall back to normal. I'd like to see a few WUs completed to see if this is real.

hmm only vista 64 bit eh? Not xp 64 bit? Drat does that mean I need to make dummy plugs? I might be doing a fresh install of vista this weekend...

If i do have to make dummy plugs anyone wanna post the how to?

What drives should I use for windows 7?

Anyone have a linky?

I just installed the 185.20 drivers and went from 14k to 22k. Vista 64.

Project: 5903 (Run 1, Clone 760, Gen 2)
Project: 5903 (Run 12, Clone 823, Gen 2)

on my GTX 295 at 648/1512/1215

once these two complete I will see if it stays at 22k or goes up or down.

There seems to be an issue with the 64 bit vista drivers and 7.

/Sigh

Going to do another install.

Sorry about the bad links. Looks like 181.71 was just released for Windows 7.

Giving the new drivers a try on my vista64 with 2x 260s. according to fahmon 2.3.4:
GPU0 Project 5902 (R11, C912, G9): 13,316 PPD
GPU1 Project 5902 (R10, C942, G8): 7,599 PPD

Both gpus are clocked the same, and water cooled. GPU0 is my primary display card with my monitor attached, GPU1 has a vga dummy plug. 7500 seems average for these cards, but the first card sure is cranking away nicely. It is producing the units almost twice as fast as the second card according to the logs, wonder why not both? Temps are similar between cards, same as I normally see. Will report back if things change.

any word on vista32 performance? I am going to set up a win rig tomorrow if I can, but what about us 32 bit guys? and what all do I need to do to get 64 bit vista? noob here on this

We @OCN had one meber that says his Vista32 is seeing increase, but that by no means is in stone. I am dnloading Win7 dvd now to test. Gawd a DVD for an OS! when will it end!

Is there a NLITE for WIN7?

My clients have dropped like rocks now, on the same units as above, they are down to 8960ppd and 6978ppd. That's at 32% and 19% progress, respectively. I've noticed the work seems to be in bursts, instead of a constant as before. It's spiking, and then dropping, once per second each - I am verifying this by the whine sound the cards make, and my UPS reporting my wattage usage as a regular pulse. I have no idea what is going on, this seems really weird.

with the 185.20 drivers on vista 64 my GTX260 with shaders at 1458 and p5903 now it is up to 13,076 ppd while it use to give ~7500 ppd

an 8800GT with shaders at 1782 on p5902 was putting out ~4500 ppd now is doing 7300 ppd

Thanks OP  I haven't ever seen this kind of performance boost. Does anyone know how stable these beta drivers are?

this is wierd I installed these drivers and am using vista 64 and got no increase what so ever any suggestions?

this is on a i7 platform with a gtx 295

could be because your shit is so fast on its own LOL

Ok pulling 7100 on a 5900WU on a non OC-ed (for now just installed the thing) GTX 260 orig flavor.

2k bump in production..... not bad at all.

Edit: now down to 6400 ppd....... this is a big up and down move.

dude the 192 core 260's suck! On a core 216 at 1518mhz shader i was pulling around 8k ppd. Now i'm at 14.37 k ppd!! wtf. I'm installing vista 64bit and these drivers on my main folding box tomorrow.

Thanks ptrman for the link on dummy vga's!
