Old Rig Summary
First let's start with my old build: This is what it looked like when it was brand new in 2009. At the time it cost about $1200. Here are the specifications:
History and Hard Drive Situation
Since 2009 I have upgraded my RAM with the same exact ram to 8GB of DDR2 filling out all the slots. I have also upgraded my video card twice from the 9600GT to first a GTX 260 and then a GTX 470.
Since then I have also bought 3 SSDs. Two Sandisk 120GB and one Vertex Plus 120GB. I have also put in two 1TB Western Digital Black caviar drives and one 2TB Western Digital Black.
They are in the following configuration:
Preperation
After gutting the case I washed it under a shower so it looks brand new again. I even did the same with all the fans. They work fine now after 24 hours of drying. I didn't hook them up right away and tested each one separately before hooking them up to the power supply.
Sorry, ignore the case in the background.
New Rig Summary
So I decided it was time to upgrade the architecture on my main rig so this meant a new motherboard, memory, and CPU. I decided to upgrade the GPU as well.
I ordered this:
Post Install
The initial cost of already included hardware: Approx: $800-1000 for already in-computer hard drives, case, and power supply. Cost of additional hardware approx $2000.
The most amazing thing was that my Raid 0 C:\ booted right in. Windows 8 restarted once to install drivers. I never had to format. Was in-game playing Skyrim at 200FPS right away.
All hail glorious PC gaming master race!
Cooling
CPU is at 27-31 C at no load. 55-60 C at 100% after 20 minutes or so.
GPU idles at 37-40 C. About 60-75 C at 100%
Place of Purchase
Everything was obtained on Newegg except for the CORSAIR Hydro Series H100 CPU cooler which was cheaper at my local Bestbuy for $85. Newegg's price is $125.
