Are you sick of your wishes for privacy going unheard? Well so are these guys, and they’re planning a “We’re Quitting Facebook” day. Yes, you heard me right, on May 31st, 2010 a crippling blow will be dealt to Facebook as their userbase deserts them. How many users, you ask? Well, so far 789. Just a bit under 400million left; sweet justice imminent.
Why are we quitting?
For us it comes down to two things: fair choices and best intentions. In our view, Facebook doesn't do a good job in either department. Facebook gives you choices about how to manage your data, but they aren't fair choices, and while the onus is on the individual to manage these choices, Facebook makes it damn difficult for the average user to understand or manage this. We also don't think Facebook has much respect for you or your data, especially in the context of the future.

803 as of this post. Man, they break 1,000 and it's par-tay time! :p

Can we go back to picking on Apple? I'm about sick of hearing about Facebook and couldn't give a fuck less about their privacy issues and people too fucking stupid to deal with granularity.

Oh, just for you -- pay attention to my next post.

Maybe they're the smart ones, and the rest are like sheep following the flock? Sites like Facebook and Twitter seem too much like ego trips to me. It's hard enough keeping your privacy these days,is it worth increasing the risk for vanity's sake?

Ya really, WTF is wrong with facebook providing a completely free service which is not mandatory to use in way shape or form.

Don't like it, don't use it... Some people think they are deserving of everything for nothing

They may wish to consider migrating to Diaspora, which was reported on last week.

A couple of months ago I joined Facebook, checked out Mafia Wars and found it too stupid to be interesting, and deleted my Facebook account. I think I am too old to understand why Facebook.

Yes, I put information on Facebook to share with the world, then expect 100% privacy. WTF? I feel embarrassed just taking the time to mention how stupid this story is.

Worse, the people who think they deleted their info or just plain quit seem to think their information is gone.

Like Google, they save everything.

Again I have no really issue with Facebook but I do agree with the ego trip people go on while I view some of the my friends pages. Privacy is still an issue though, I got on this social network to network with my family, friends, and co-workers not Wal-mart, Target, CNN, etc...

the think is almost 10 times that has quit already.. my friends list while it was small to begin with maybe 50 people is almost non existant now as almost all of them have quit and gone back to myspace.. same goes with a lot of my other friends as well that had much larger friends lists then mine..

same thing for me alf717.. i really only use facebook to keep in contact with family and old high school friends that have moved around the country..

Good luck finding another social networking site that won't try to harvest your personal information.

(10 x 800) + 50 = 8050

So 8050 people have quit using a free service. Only almost 400 million to go!

It is after all a social networking site. You can choose whoever you want to socially netork with, hence, you choose real life friends, family, and old highschool friends. Outside of that, any info you freely gave facebook (which is a free service mind you) is basically free to use.

I use facebook for the same reasons as you and have a small friends list because of it. That does not mean that everyone on facebook uses it like we do. Like you, I can see the appeal it has for some even if it does not appeal to me. Just don't think everyone is like you.

This is stupid. No, I don't necessarily love the new crap that Facebook has implemented, but seriously, this? My guess is that the number of people who "quit" will barely be in the few-thousand range.

I mean, honestly, what's that gonna do, give the servers a little breathing space so Facebook can more easier implement even stupider privacy "options"? :p

www.target.com
www.cnn.com

Much easier and far less then a popularity contest

Maybe it's just me, but I think real life conversation, phone, mail, and email are enough (or too many) ways to get in touch with me. If you want yet another way knock yourself out. I just don't see the need for an entire page dedicated to ME ME ME.

And that's why I don't use my physical address or my email to communicate with anyone.

Facebook is better because people only need to know my name in order to find me; and perhaps more importantly because I alone decide who can and cannot contact me.

I don't see what the big deal here is. If you don't want Facebook to give your personal info away to random people, don't give your personal info to Facebook. It's that simple - my Facebook profile is pretty much empty, and I don't upload pictures or use applications or any similar bullshit, so I can talk to all the friends I want, yet still retain privacy. It is not hard - at all.

The only useful function for facebook I can think of is to reunite with old friends you may have lost contact with. Outside of that, and once you have contact with them, it just becomes a big waste of time. Really, what it should be is something simple, like an online directory of people who want to be listed. You know, This is my name, maybe a picture, short description, way of contact, enough said. When you first join, you can search out old friends, contact them, then leave it alone (and maybe others who want to will contact you eventually). I dont see the need to be active on it all the time though, that seems very much like a waste of time to me.

Looks like 1031 people as of this post. I'd join, but I dont have a facebook account to delete.

well people still have friendster and linkedin and myspace right?

seriously people are drumming something up from nothing. If you don't want it online then dont put it online!

besides, facebook is a company that is out to make money and you shouldn't trust them from the beginning. so don't put things there that can come back to haunt you.

the idiots in new york that's trying to create an alternative to facebook is stupid imo, they are just taking advantage of the anti-facebook momentum to make money, their 'ideal' of free open whatever networking site is bs. it's backed by bunch of investors that are out to make money themselves. haha

Here's the thing: Facebook, as it is (with the exception of the privacy policy weaknesses), is a well-made and well-designed social networking site. The name has a ring to it, the website interface looks simple, solid, and "perfect." There's nothing wrong with it... except for the privacy policies being weak and corrupt.

That's the problem. Why does a system that is so close to "perfection" HAVE to have a catch (aka privacy policies being purposefully weak and corrupt)?

EDIT: Also, that Dyaspora* thing has a shitty name, and WTF is that asterisk for? I expect their work to be poor and incompetent to that which Facebook is and has by its software design, UI, graphical simplicity, etc.

Social Networking WILL NOT WORK if you use your real name, real location, real birthdate and tag photos.

When registering, instead of using "John Smith", use J0ohnn Smm1tth.
Instead of using your real age, your age is 32, use 28..

Simple instructions. If you are dumb enough to use your real info, you deserve to have your job lost and your reputation ruined for posting those tagged lewd photos of your Las Vegas drunken orgy on your supposedly sick day off work.

Smart one? People who post their information on a social web site and demand privacy at the same time isn't my idea of smart.

Or if you are a dishonest person you deserve to lose your job for being dishonest about abusing company policy.

This is going to cripple Facebook like America was crippled when all the illegal Mexicans do a day of "not supporting America"....its serious shit.

queue derail......

The entire point of Facebook is that people use their real info and not some stupid online alias.

I personally find FB to be an excellent service. My profile contains my name, interests, and mobile number - if someone is determined enough to steal my identity with that much info, let them.. I spend about five minutes a day on it, sharing interesting web links with my friends and reading theirs. It also keeps me connected with old friends who I rarely see in person anymore due to distance.

If we're at the point that we can't even put our full names on the Internet...fuck that; I'll just take the security risk.

FB is also great for sharing pictures, provided you're not stupid enough to upload ones that incriminate you, of course.

Won't help........what's been shared is probably already archived somewhere and spread around.

To my knowledge, only if the info in question is photos.

Applications you use & pages you like can't access what isn't there, as far as they're concerned.
