Friend gave me Mass Effect for 360 so I could experience it before the second game comes out but I have some questions.

At what point does the game hook you in? I'm on the ship right now after I was promoted and the previous officer stepped down.. I chose where I wanted to go, but how long will it take to get there? I've just been walking around on the ship talking to everyone for about an hour of nonsense. The game has been slow-paced obviously in the beginning but how do I get out of this stage.
 
You need to use the Galaxy map to pick your desired location and when it asks you if you want to proceed to another system yosay yes.
 
The game takes place in real time, and you're traveling at relativistic speeds. It'll actually take you thousands of years to finish the game. :D

Actually, you have to use the galaxy map to choose your destination, then you'll be at that star system instantly.

I only dig up this thread because I was thinking the same thing. I just started with the game, got to this same point, picked a destination and couldnt figure out if/when we arrived. The airlock was staying locked, so I just kind of sat there for a while.

Heres how to get to the action:

Go to the galaxy map and pick a system, depending on your mission. It doesnt take long to get to a system, its just a quick cutscene and a loading screen. Each system has 4 or so planets, one of which will have the option to land... the others just have the option to survey or something along those lines. Once you land its pretty straight forward, explore the area, go to the points of interest etc.

It might be different further into the game, I dont know Im just past this point where you got stuck. Hope this helps. The game really started picking up once I figured this out.
 
the entrace to get on to the bridge where you could activate the galaxy map is pretttttyyyyy obscure!! lol
i miss it for quite awhile but let me hint hint, it is on the top floor right next to the door.

ok it is not that clear..i forgot the name of the bald guy that you talked to, but it is right next to him.

find the bridge to the galaxy and you find your way into the game!
 
You probably just need to leave the ship. To sumarize:

On the bridge you'll see a large holograph of the universe. On the back side of it there is a ramp to approach it. After you've become Commander of the Normandy you have to approach it and "use" it. It will ask your destination and confirm that you want to go there. You'll then get a little flying Normandy cut scene before it returns you to standing in front of it (map).

If you've traveled to one of the main locations (ex: Feros, Noveria, Virmire) then you have to walk to the door and leave the ship. The door is between Joker and the galaxy map on the left side. When you leave it will ask you to choose two team members to accompany you. If you've traveled to one of the planets you can explore you'll get another cut scene of the Normandy dropping you off in the Mako.
