Mass Effect rocks...

Quick question, does ME use DX10 and if so, is there a huge difference between DX10 and DX9? My dilemma is to whether I use my more powerful desktop, with WinXP to play it on, or my laptop, which is using Vista.

I installed ME yesterday on the PC. Unfortunately it still stutters like the 360 version with my 8800GT (1920x1080), but at least I can slap one of the new ATI cards in later.

One thing that's bugging me massively (pun intended) is the darkness of the images. Even cranking up the gamma slider it looks like there's a lot of black crush in the PC version compared to the 360 version. Any solutions to this? I even see it in online ME screenshots for PC.

I sure wish they had better mipmapping too. Textures up close are painful.

I have ME for 360 and PC. I played through on the 360 twice and now I just started a new character on the PC. It is the only game I ever bought twice!... well I had to buy it twice since my ex took the 360 version back.

I play it on my 3850 256MB with max settings (1920x1080) and I have no problems. Not even a stutter.

An entertaining storyline/shooter, but a weak RPG with strong dialogue options. Also weak replayability.

Neither of those problems on my 8800GTS512 and a CRT @ 1600x1200.

EDIT: My point on the CRT was that if the black crush was the fault of the game somehow, I'd see it in an instant on a CRT. How do you know the crush isn't your LCD monitor? We didn't have to move the gamma slider up at all to play comfortably on CRT.

I use Film Grain, in case you are wondering why it looks grainy.

DEATH TO FILM GRAIN.

/starts petition to get steven hawking to make me a time machine so i can destroy the douche bag who decided film grain was something we should put in digital shit. /RAGE

I rented 300 and about 15mins i couldnt stand it - i turned it off because of grain. I wouldn't have played mass effect if i couldnt turn it off

Grain is at the top of my hatred list.

300 had film grain? I didn't even notice. I played my first game of ME without it, but on my second I turned it on. It looks pretty awesome on some of the planets. Otherwise, it's almost invisible.

I bought this game yesterday. Never played it on the xbox, nor seen it in action besides video reviews. I love it! I also moderately enjoyed KotOR (but never finished it) but so far this game seems much more enjoyable.

If you enjoy RPGs/Action games this is a must have!

Film grain looks like shit, I'm so glad someone mentioned it, I turned it off immediately

Because right before I played the PC version I partially played through the 360 version and had none of the visual issues. Tweaking the gamma slider up way high gets rid of the darkness issues but doesn't do much for the contrast of the game, but then it's a straight console port anyway and still looks like crap even on PC. Performance wise, turning off motion blur helped the frame rates immensely, I'm only getting stutter now is when I was getting rushed by zombies (yeah, more zombies, even in space, there are zombies... actually, I think they're just the Flood from Halo, even the citadel is a Halo, LOL).

Now that I've got 20+ hours in to the game, I have to say I'm so disappointed. I loved KOTOR and played it through many times. This game just isn't KOTOR. It's some horrible EA-spawned console abomination. It's still fun, but Mass Effect should be held up as the perfect example of why console games are ruining gaming as a whole. It has no soul. It's a mile wide and an inch deep. At least with a mouse, I can actually hit the enemies, and it's a good game for $30. I'd be unsatisfied if I spent $60 on this for the 360.

I would love to play Mass Effect. I bought it when it first came out and have never been able to get it to work. It goes to the splash screen and hardlocks my pc up. I've tried the latest patch... still refuses to work. :(

E6600 Oc'd to 3.2, 2GB Corsair Dominator, EVGA 8800GTX. XP Professional, AVG, Adaware, and Spybot S&D. I've heard that if you uninstall AVG it will work, but that isnt an option.

THIS LINK states that you may get by with putting the entire Mass Effect install folder in the AVG exceptions list.

Is your AVG free or paid?

God, I love Mass Effect, I'm like half way through the story so far and it is just amazing. It is wonderfully written, and all the little side missions that you can do along the way make it even better. I have a feeling I'll be playing through this several times.

Damn, it's a damn shame about the DRM. I really do want to play this game but no way am I supporting a company that uses SecuROM.

Boycotting companies that use SecuROM means pretty much boycotting PC gaming at this point - EA was one of the last ones to the party on SecuROM 7.

And giving credit where it's due, a company called Demiurge is the one that handled the porting - Bioware made the game on 360, but it was up to Demiurge to redo the interface and such to suit the PC better. I think they did a pretty awesome job, so I'd want people to know their name in case they did a game of their own someday. :D

Yes, that is increasingly the case, which is unfortunate. I refuse to back down on this matter.

OT: Also, I have a '96 Miata - classic red. It's my auto-x car.

I second that. Nice job.

Whats the point of paying $50 for a game that I wont be able to use in 6 months due to my normal PC wiping/upgrade schedule (Every 2months)

I love this game. I never play space games, but I think I might start.

The models are crazy good. Great story. I started playing it and 8 hours later had to leave for work haha. The character I created looks badass with that scar. Still get 40-60fps maxed out at 1920x1200; E6600 (stock 2.4) is going 100% though :(

Only prob. is my game freezes a lot forcing me to restart. Weaknesses are as other have said, repetitive planet hopping missions.

Best money I have spent on a game in a looooooooooooong time (even though I do not agree with this b.s. limitations EA has placed on this, wrong wrong wrong).

Out of curiousity; why do you wipe every 2 months?

I used to do that crap on XP. Now with Vx64, I don't need to. This OS just stays fresh n clean. Except I keeop buying faster drives and other hardware, forcing me to wipe, haha.

I used to do a clean install about once a year, now OS sits on its own drive and all games sit on other drives; every other month just seems a bit much.
