Mass Effect making (geek) headlines

even tho you can call to get more activations or email ect.. its usually easier to dl a cracked version and never have to worry about activations

when i was installing my legit copy of windows xp every month i got tired of calling MS to reactiveate it so ive been using a cracked version ever sence.. less hassles. and they already got my money so it not like im hurting them any.

I almost bought this the other day, but I'm glad I didn't. I refuse to give money to EA fucks that do things like this.

I rather make a $50 paypal donation to Bioware directly.

I should NEVER have to send an e-mail, make a phone call, or download a cracked version to play a game I BOUGHT under ANY circumstances.

Would you put up with it if you had to call Honda so you could get into your car?
What about turning on your TV?

No, why the hell do we put up with it on video games?

I have to call Volvo to get back into my radio every time I pull the battery :( Stupid 4-digit lock-out code that only they know, and that criminals can easily bypass, but end-users are stuck with suffering from. I hate the feature, and as soon as I could I replaced the factory stereo. Dealerships even charge you money to give you the code unless you purchased your car there, and my dealership just shut down. So, if I lose the code, I have to pay for it the next time... now THAT is stupid.

Exactly, why do we put up with this shit. I'd love to play Mass effect, but I won't buy it (or torrent) until they stop this shit.

Can anyone confirm that?

I cna't confirm it, but I do recall reading that the DRM checks and saves your computer settings and all, and if you change something like a GPU, its a change and the DRM think its a new computer.

That was Starforce, not SecuROM. Starforce used rootkits and its own kernel-level drivers to really dig deep, and it ended up causing a lot of problems. Thankfully, publishers got smart and stopped using it, so it's not really an issue any more.

SecuROM, although a pain in the ass with the whole activation business, is not malicious like Starforce was. As bad as this is, it's still preferable to Starforce.

Yea, but Securom/Macrovision still hides itself in your system/registry. Same as what a rootkit does but isn't malicious. No 3rd party software should be legally allowed to hide itself so that the end user can't remove it at their will. You don't even get prompted to install their shitware. It just installs itself when you install the game.

Instead of combating piracy they are going to push people that normally by games to pirate them

thats funny you say that because thats exactly the reason i have sometimes chose to torrent games rather then paying for them. i just want to install and play, and pirated games are quickly becoming much more reliable for that. i paid for bioshock and couldnt even install it without hacking/exe fixing it.

Bioshock just got it's activation limit removed which is a very good thing and I hope they will do that with Mass Affect too. The 3 activation limit is the most assinine copy protection scheme I EVER heard of in my entire computer gaming life (I started computer gaming over 20 years ago back in the days of the AMIGA in late 1980's) and this copy protection scheme really takes the cake. Boy it's going to really anger a lot of people. The regular masses won't know how or won't want to be bothered with the crack\warez scene and so a LOT of them just might say "take this machine and shove it I ain't buying this shit no more!". One thing is for sure is that it's very insulting.

Big greedy corporations will do what they think they can do, not what is sensible and obvious but what they think they can do. That is why many new games costs $50/$60 and have a shitty little manual and skimpy box. Now they are so cocky that they have a copy protection such as this.

I don't know how this prevents piracy, if anything its encouraging it.

lol 3 installs..... ridiculous, I wanted to try this game too after finishing up Stalker :)

Very encouraging indeed.

I think EA misinterpreted pirates to children who lend copies of games to all their friends. Ridiculous.

Can anyone confirm that?

I just swapped my motherboard and switched out an 8800GTS for two 4850s and I didn't have to do a thing. I think it's a bunch of shit. I haven't experienced any DRM issues with my copy. I've got it installed on two computers, play it on one at any given time (they're on two separate floors of my house,) and haven't had a single issue so far. (except the fact that I beat it, and still don't have the expansion to play :D )

I would have expected that to happen with a mobo or processor or hard drive... but not a video card.

Sounds like the game would have used the three activtions though, so you will probably be out of activations after your next upgrade.

Installation on your computer (1st activation)

Upgrading motherboard and vid cards (2nd activation - Presuming you re-installed your OS)

Installing it on the second machine (3rd activation)
