Mass amounts of errors

As of today, whenever I boot up my machine and log into Windows, I see a ridiculous amount of runtime errors for all the programs that start on windows boot and when I look at my system tray, none of these programs are running. When I try to start them manually via the start menu, sometimes I get the same error and it won't run and sometimes it will run. I have also seen some funky things when browsing sites I regularly visit like a search bar is too tiny for me to click or dropdown menus are displaying blank objects.

I have recently upgraded from WinXP SP2 to SP3. However, everything on my machine was functioning without any flaws at all for a good week or so. There are no other recent system changes I can think of that would cause all of my programs to behave so awkwardly. Does anyone know of something I can try?

(I couldn't think of whether to put this here or in OS so I put it here)

First: do a memtest, seriously. Regardless of whatever else you might think, do at least 2 passes of memtest+ or some other RAM tester that runs outside of Windows (bootable CD, I mean).

If that's clean, then...

Second: acquire the hard drive diagnostic utility from the maker of your primary hard drive and do the Quick/Short test, and even if that comes up clean without issues, run the Advanced/Thorough one anyway.

If that's clean, then...

Third: make sure your antivirus software is up to date (you do use it, right)? If not, that could be a way for things to cause you more grief than you might realize.

If that's clean, then...

Fourth: do a System File Check to make sure everything is ok - this relates to Windows system files, obviously, but if Windows isn't working right neither will your applications. Start - Run - and type "sfc /scannow" and let it finish. You will more than likely need to have your XP CD around (you should make a proper XP SP3 installation CD and stop using that old SP2 one).

If that's all done and everything checks out, then...

Fifth: consider a reinstallation of the OS if necessary. Last resort, and actually the first thing I try to do anymore. After decades of fixing computer issues for 100K+ people, I'm tired of fixing computers and trying to track down issues. It's infinitely easier and far more efficient to back up personal data and files and just start over again with a fresh install in 20 mins or less.

Hope this helps...

I was thinking I might need to do a fresh install. Of course right after I posted this, i restarted my comp 4 more times and now all of a sudden I'm not getting errors anymore. The funny part is I haven't even changed anything. That was so bizarre. I will keep your post in mind though in case it starts happening again. Thanks anyway.

Test your RAM, like... yesterday. Like right now, seriously.

I recently had issues very similar to yours, almost exactly the same, ran memtest and it failed miserably. Took out the sticks, reseated them, memtest passed with flying colors for two complete cycles and I had no issues for 3 days, then it started all over again. Did the reseat, everything was fine for another 2-3 days, then started all over again.

Reseated the RAM a third time but that didn't help as memtest just threw up error after error. Replaced the RAM completely with new sticks, no problems since, and that was a month ago.

So test the RAM, really that should be the FIRST thing tested always because it can seem as though the issues are Windows or software based, and that's not always the case as my experience recently showed.

Test the RAM, regardless of it working "just fine" now or not.

Sorry it took me so long (lots of work over the past few days), but memtest found no errors.

It could be a trojan/virus/etc. that has corrupted so many .dll files that anything that requires a certain .dll would generate a runtime error (think something that uses the VC++ redist .dll's or something) - or your harddrive could be dying and these files are corrupt/missing all on their own.

I know this sounds crazy, but check the power supply as well. I've seen this a few times were the PS was wigging.

I didn't read everyones replys besides check the ram.

Do you a RAID? drivers could have got corrupted or one of your drives is going bad
