Calling all [H] Commandos, it has been relatively quite around the DC-Vault thread. My idea?

MARCH MADNESS for DC!

March Madness will be a group push in the Rectilinear Crossing Number project for the next 31 days.

Anyone can participate in March Madness, it is a group effort in a specific project from the DC-Vault. The only requirement is BONIC and spare CPU cycles.

With this push we can gain quite a few points on the DC-Vault.

For all the those who have not worked on this project or have never done DC through BONIC. The steps are as follows.
1) Download Bonic. http://boinc.berkeley.edu/
2)Add a project by going to "Tools" and select "Attach to project"
3)Scroll through the list to find "Rectilinear Crossing Number"
4)Create a profile by using an existing email address and creating a password for the profile.
5)A website will pop up to set your User name for the project.
6)It will then ask you to find a team to join. Search for "[H]ard|OCP".
7)Then select "Join this team".
You have successfully added the project and joined the [H]ard|OCP team!

To login to see your stats and points for the project:
1)Go to http://dist.ist.tugraz.at/cape5/
8)Under "Returning Participants" select "Your Account".
9)Login with the email and password you created.
10)On this page your stats are shown and if you click on the "[H]ard|OCP" under "Community" it will show you how you compare to others on the team.

I wish all of you Commandos the best of luck and hope you will participate in March Madness! I will be converting my computers over as soon as possible. :)
 
I will be in while quite a few CPU cores. :) Just finishing up a few WU from other projects before I move over machines to RCN.

Also just for a point of reference at the beginning of the "Madness" ( March 1) the [H]ard|OCP team is ranked 53rd in the project with 525,197 points.

Oh yeah - Anyone interested in starting an actual NCAA Tourney bracket for the DC subforum? Maybe with some type of tie-in to the RCN project? Maybe with some sort of [H]ardware giveaway to the winner? PM me if you have suggestions or thoughts. :)

How memory friendly is Rectilinear Crossing if you have a lot of cores going at once?
 
The current WU I have running is using about 4K of RAM. So pretty minimal even with several cores running. :) Unlike the Cosmology Unit I have running which is taking up almost 700MB of RAM!! :eek:

Yeah, that's why I was asking.. I know Cosmology can be a pig on i7 rigs and just didn't want to experience the same thing if I decide to join RCN for awhile.
 
Wow, 38 hour WU estimates? That's quite a lot of time for a single WU... Here's hoping that it's a long estimate!
 
A couple of the ones I got said 23 hours and finished in less than 10 minutes. :D Then again some of them have crunched away for a few hours now. So not all of them will take that long.

Im still trying to finish up these damn Cosmology units. One of them is using almost 800MB of RAM! Seems like a little much. One would think they could program better than this. :rolleyes:

I moved two cores over. More to come.
 
I'm doing the great OS reinstall tomorrow.

I should be able to move a few secondary systems over as long as it is. Light on RAM usage.

What are you seeing used per core?
 
For RAM usage? When I looked at my other systems earlier today the client was using about 4-5K per core. Its light. :)
 
Heh... One unit on my lappy finished in 56 seconds. Don't know if it was a bad WU or not. Didn't even get to 1%.
 
RCN is notorious with bad estimates. The workunits last between 10 seconds and 4 hours. If I remember correctly they end just after 4 hours no matter what(not sure if that has changed.) I think its just the nature of the project.

And it is much lighter on the RAM so many of the older systems should be able to handle it easily

Actually I think they got some of that worked out. I had a couple yesterday which finished after just a few seconds, (which I suppose could be bad WUs, I just always assumed they were small Wus that completed early) but I have WUs on both my dual cores that were estimated at 23.xx hours and took right at about 24 hours each. So it looks like right now they are running through some fairly large WUs but from what I have seen so far they seem to be fairly stable and have low RAM usage. :)
 
Oh okay I'm glad they worked it out. I wasn't sure if they figured out the really long WUs.
 
I'm getting periodic messages like the following but I am receiving credit just fine for all work units:

Im getting them as well. Sounds like its not an RCN problem but a problem with any BOINC project that uploads zero length files. Either way you will get the proper credit for the WU. :)

I finally finished up all the Cosmology units I had in my queue. So as of tonight my i7 is switched to RCN. Should be up to a dozen cores by morning. :D

Hey now, Im in the #2 spot! My computers are just finishing switching over except for my i7 which I will have to switch over today.

I say good luck to you on beating me, but I will hold you off for as long as I can! :)

Damn, I really wish I could afford to pick up an i7 to replace/supplement my q6600... :rolleyes:

Okay, #3, can I take down troach @ #3? :D As long as he doesn't notice me sneaking up from behind and switch 20 or so cores over, I'll be good...
 
Janthanis, If you want the #2 spot you can try, but I am gonna put up a pretty good fight. I don't have access to my i7 box until next week so you have a good chance to get some more points quickly on me.

Good luck Jathanis! You have a pretty good start looking at today's points. These others have a big head start but nothing is impossible for a fellow Commando. :)

However, dont think for an instant that tr0ach hasnt seen this. He is silent but rarely late for a party. ;)

Update: Yesterday the Horde was 27th in Daily Point Totals. So far today 10th in total points. Nice work guys. More D!

And right now we're at #4, with only 2K ppd to hit #3! Luckily, I just realized that my home machine still had 2 core wrapping up ufluid, so I'm only running about 75% - not quite 2K, but it'll help some. And it looks like I woke the sleeping giant, err, tr0ach, so we should start moving up quickly... :cool:
 
So far today we are even up in third in points. Maybe we can even get up into second place with a few more machines! I've got one more dual core to bring over this weekend. That one with Jathanis's 2 more cores will help. Plus Kendrak said he would be bringing over a little processing muscle. :)

I think we can make it, because I have yet to unveil my secret weapon! :D haha.

I have not been able to get to my i7 machine so it is still crunching Cosmology@home by next monday it will be dedicated to RCN and that should get another 1k RAC for RCN. :)
 
We seem to have awaken the mighty tr0ach! Today so far he has put out 7,960 points! I've only put out 1,806 and the next closest to tr0ach is metallicafan at 2,835!

Good Job tr0ach! I'd like to thank everyone who is participating so far in March Madness. Lets show some other teams how powerful we are when we focus together!
 
A quite impressive showing by tr0ach indeed! :) Well done! its amazing that 5 people with some serious [H]ardware can get to #2 in daily points. #1 anyone? I just started up one more dual core this afternoon so we should get a little more there.

Also worth noting - We moved up 2 spots to #51 overall. :cool:

Umm, let me know and I may just jump right on this with the :D Dually Xeon X5550s for the month and this is only RCN project? Does it has GPU support? Cause if it does then it's all gonna be sweeter.
 
Hey Jon, dual Xeons would do some big damage in RCN. The project only has a CPU client but running RCN on the CPUs and another project (GPUGRID, f@h, etc) on the GPUs should work just fine. As you know the Horde has many different teams in different projects but for March we are just trying to make a big push in RCN. We'd appreciate the help! Thanks for considering. :)

Wow Jon! Thanks for those Xeons! Those will definitely help. :)

I had my e8400 down for a little bit. Apparently it did not like being turned off. Figured out it was the RAM. When my old mobo went it must have taken the RAM with it but not at first. Luckily I had a spare stick laying around.
 
Adding my Q6600@3.0Ghz into the fray ;)

This will be delayed for a bit but no biggie!
 
Man, I've been crunching on many WUs which have been taking over 12 hours... The points better be worth it.

That is an impressive screen shot Jon! You will start to pile up points pretty quickly running 20 threads concurrently. :) Your contribution is much appreciated.

We were first in points yesterday with 29K points. So far today we are in third but there should be one more update on FreeDC I think. We are going to start jumping some more teams rather rapidly. Also we at our current pace we should be on pace to hit 1M points in a couple weeks. Crunch on!

The quad will come online this evening, I had couple of things to do on it before anything else - transferring chunks of data from it into my back up HD and stuff. It should be running solely BONIC tonight. We should be hitting approx 40-50k per day now :D

Yes, I'm deaf and I'm working in the Rochester area and am planning on going back to school to wrap up a BS degree eventually. Maybe one of these days we could meet up and have a "DC'er meetup :D

You might want to use a BOINC account manager like BOINCStats on systems you don't have regular access to. Saves the headache of actually having to sit down or remote host into each machine.
