I haven't built a new computer in about 3 years so I am trying to re-educate myself before doing my next.
Basically I have a:
AMD Athlon XP 1600+ @ 1.4GHz
Epox 8KHA+ motherboard
768 MB PC2100 crucial DDR
GeForce 3 Ti200
Now, I know pretty much what I am wanting to jump to. I don't think that I am ready for the 64-bit generation just yet and neither is my wallet.
This is the part I am mainly stuck at: what is the difference between a "barton" and a "thoroughbred"? I am noticing that the barton has a larger amount of processor cache than a thoroughbred but the thoroughbred's have a faster clock speed.
The XP2600+ thoroughbred runs at 2.08 GHz
The XP2600+ barton runs at 1.9 GHz
For casual gaming (world of warcraft) and web design, which one would be more beneficial? There is only a $3 price gap between them so I really don't understand how much of a difference there is.
And lastly, how great of an improvement is a jump from a 1600+ to a 2600+ going to be? There is about a 500 MHz difference and I was wondering if that is going to be worth the actual upgrade itself. The most I can pay is $100 so I can go to a 2700+ but not beyond at the moment.
