Manufacturing the 4770?

How is the 4770 being manufactured when TSMC's 40nm issues are pushing back GT300 and RV870?

As far as I know it just relates to no large efficiency increase in general. Looking at power draw numbers for the 4770 the lackluster efficiency improvement seems to indicate that it "suffers" from that problem as well.

IMO it's all about economics right now.

The HD4770 is perfect for the economy. Performance is awesome.

Also NVIDIA and ATI are probably giving some time to sale more of the current selection.

So if I understand you correctly, a hypothetical 40nm refresh of current 55nm cards with this faulty process would be cheaper and smaller, but retain the same power and cooling requirements?

The HD 4770's performance is on average roughly 90% - 95% of the HD 4850 (meaning 5% - 10% slower). But with only 45% of the HD 4850's power consumption.

i think the 4770 was more of a test bed card for ATI.. to see what kind of effect the problems have on the real world market.. you can only do so many synthetic testing on a card before you basicly have to rely on the people buying them to try to find the faults.. but even with its problems.. its a good sign that 40nm is on its way soon.. once they can get the wrinkles out of the fab problems..

Most of the reviews I've seen have it within spitting distance of the 4830 at load, and only 10 or so watts lower at idle. Maybe they got some new version of powerplay in their drivers or perhaps some chips are that much better than others for now? (or maybe they're all using kill-a-watts ;)) Honstly the numbers are all over the place, and the ones you posted are the best I've seen.

From what I hear ATI released teh 4770 a little too early for how quickly they can manufacture them. Smart move or desperate move?
