Manually throttling GPU Fan

I have a PCIE x1 Zotac GT 610 in my media server and the friggin fan on the GPU sounds like a turbine. I thought that I could throttle it via the nvidia control panel but it does not support that option nor does it throttle itself with the temp. It just runs at maximum speed all the time.

Right now I am thinking of putting a resistor in one of the leads. Unless someone has a better idea, maybe registry tweak?

Is there anyway I can slow it down before I just unplug it entirely?

MSI Afterburner. You can set a custom fan profile... for mine I do a set 35% fan power until around 45°C, after which it ramps up to 100% by 60 °C.
 
I got bad news and good news.

The bad news is that the application, while letting me set the fan speed, does actually effect it.
The good news is the turbine like noise was not the video card, but my CPU fan.

Use a program called speedfan, which will let you do the same thing with the CPU fan. This will only work if you have a 4 pin PWM CPU fan.
 
Have the Intel fan and the bios is set to PWM control. I tried the program but changing the PWM has no effect on fan speed.

I actually wound up changing the smart fan control in the bios to voltage and the fan ran 200 rpms lower than with PWM and a lot quieter too.
 
The stock intel fan should be PWM. Speedfan is a bit cluttered, and changing the fan profile isn't as simple as with MSI AB.

Either way, if it's quieter, doesn't really matter how you did it.
 
You are correct, it is a 4 lead PWM fan that came stock with the heatsink. Speed Fan detected the controllers successfully but for whatever reason does not affect the fan. I will try intel qst for closure, but at 900 rpms its hardly audible over the hard drives.

I would like to go passive with this machine, but havent found a heat sink worth buying. I may try to run a duct from the cpu to one of the 80mm case fans as an experiment instead.

It should work, I think you need to dig around in the settings a bit more. Speedfan is very unintuitive, IMO, but it works.

Ducting works too, if you can make a closed duct.
