Manually control output channels

I recently switched from XP to Win 7, so I had to give up my old Turtle Beach Santa Cruz. I decided to go with onboard audio (Realtek ALC892). My speakers are old Altec Lansing ACS48s, which still do the job. I've got one gripe with the onboard audio though; I cannot manually control the audio output like I could with my old TBSC. On the TBSC, I used to leave my speakers connected, my headphone, and digital out to my stereo. I could, through the software, control which output was used at any time. With the onboard, I cannot do this. If I have my speakers plugged in, then connect my headphone, I lose output from the speakers as the headphone then takes over. While this seems like it makes sense, it causes me problems with some games. If I'm playing a game, and decide that I want to switch to headphones, I plug them in and they take over. However, when I do that, some games will then not recognize the microphone. I have to exit the game and restart it. I also like to keep my headphones connected (via rear jacks) all the time.

On the TBSC, when I wanted to output my mp3s to my stereo, I could choose to change the output to digital audio. My speakers and headphones would no longer output at that time.

So my question is, do any of the current sound cards allow you to manually control which output is active? None of the online information that I could find provides that kind of information.

Have you tried using the windows sound control panel?

It works fine for me when I need to change output, though I am going from either built in real tech to USB head phones or, now SB X-Fi to USB head phones.

I've found many programs, games, team speak the like allow me to specifically designate which input/out put to use and override windows as well.

I did try that. It didn't work very well. The headphone part kept disappearing when I disabled it and then rebooted.
