Looks like Rockstar and Activision might be joining the Mantle camp with GTA V and COD: Advanced Warfare.

GTA 5 is a gaming evolved title?
How in god's name did that happen.

edit: I'm gonna need a citation for that one.

its not nessisarily a gaming evolved title.

But since its console only right now, it certainly isnt a TWIMTBP title.

Supposedly the when they release the PC version, they are also going re-release an enhanced version for the PS4 and Xbone.

It already looks ridiculous, i cant wait to see what "enhancements" they make.

Rockstar doesn't even know how to make PC games I find it hard to believe they'd go the extra mile to make their game support Mantle.

Same goes for the new CoD game.

WOW! Now this is getting very interesting!

GTA V with the R.A.G.E. engine and Mantle would be an extremely good exanple of performance improvements compares to the prior GTA game.

Sims 4 and Beyond Earth should also benefit greatly.

This is really looking good!

yeah, anything with a lot of onscreen avatars and AI is going to benefit greatly

if anything this is great news for amd's apu's there are some seriously high market names on there.

One of Mantle's selling points was that while it's not the exact API in use on the next-gen consoles, the low-level access it allows more closely resembles what devs get on those consoles than what they get with DirectX. AMD claims this will allow developers to take the "close to the metal" work they do on next-gen consoles and more easily carry it over to the PC versions of their games.

So if Rockstar is working on a new version of GTA V built on the next-gen consoles, and Mantle lets them port that work over more directly without having to take it "farther from the metal", so to speak, then who knows? Maybe something like Mantle(and/or potentially DirectX 12, to be fair) is exactly what's needed for higher-quality console ports.

I hope that some of the MMOs add Mantle support. They need more tech to free up the CPU load in those games. I would like to see what Mantle could do for a Guild Wars 2 battleground with hundreds of players fighting in one area.

I agree, Sims 4 and Beyond Earth will probably get a big boost from Mantle. Civ5 has such a tendency to bog down in the late game, when there's so much stuff on the map, and it sounds like Mantle was built to relieve exactly that kind of burden. I'm just psyched at how many games I was planning to buy anyway are on the list. :)

Waiting for Prime1 to chime in stating all those games are irrelevant...
Mantle is irrelevant since Nvidia won't adopt it, DX12 will provide the same benefits and is already largely adopted by the industry.
^ This is the typical response (and probably PRIME's as well).

From another perspective, Mantle is dead on arrival (DX12's arrival, specifically).
EVEN IF AMD handed Mantle to Nvidia on a silver platter, cut-and-paste adoption (no extra coding required), Nvidia would still refuse it since it means acknowledging AMD's efforts. They'll take DX to the grave even if Mantle were hypothetically a better option.

Sounds about right, aside from the DOA part. Just because DX12 is coming out doesn't mean that suddenly developers will stop supporting mantle. Why would they?

Also, this list is suspect for me. I see absolutely no articles on the internet at ALL about GTA5 supporting mantle. Yes, frostbite games, but I haven't seen anything regarding GTA5 and probably a few others. Add another person requesting a citation for that one.

Yeah, I can see on that growing list how "dead on arrival" Mantle is. WHEN DX12 gets released and WHEN coders take advantage of it will be a while. So in the mean time those with newer AMD cards can take advantage of Mantle's benefits. Pretty easy to understand that without being bias.

Its a guess based on the fact that they are participating in the closed beta.

They havent actually announced anything.

I know you aren't PRIME1, but to that typical response I say this: DX12 may provide the same benefits, but it isn't out yet. Games that benefit from Mantle are coming out now, so even if it only gets applied to titles coming out in the next year and a half, I'll take the free performance boost. From MS's own DX12 FAQ:
Q: When will I be able to get my hands on DirectX 12?
A: We are targeting Holiday 2015 games.

EDIT: pcjunkie already touched on the same stuff. That's what I get for taking too long to type this up. :p

i doubt that it will be 'cut-and-paste' simplicity since its a cardinal rule of coding "never copy and paste" but i read somewhere that amd will/has made it available to nvidia if they desire to use it. if nvidia isnt going to be stupid about it they'll take it. because if they let apu+mantel alone for amd its going to spurt out some problems for them. its not going to be with this gen's apu's since people are still adopting to the idea of them.

Mantle will probably die in favor of a more standard API like DX12, but do you think we would have gotten the DX12 MS has shown of, if AMD didn't release mantle?

MS has been very slow to do anything on the game front for many years now, and I do not think they would have made DX12 anything other than a small evolution over DX11, if AMD had not shown mantle.

How about the same kind of push for crossfire support? There are too many games where it don't work right or is unsupported.

Huddy has already stated that several developers want amd to continue development after DX12 is released.

Whether is makes financial sense for amd to do so, is another issue.

Its up to the devs to implement it in mantle (ie the engine), so its off AMDs shoulders.

Frostbite obviously already has it.

Are there any game out their that fully use DX11 yet?
Good question. I believe BF4 makes use of all the 'tent pole' DX11 features. No game, to my knowledge, uses DX11.2, though, which added support for tiled resources, among other things.

Yeah I would love to see if they could carry over load on compute to the gpu instead of being tied down to the cpu.

Then again it prolly won't fix all of the zerg blob lag in the game :) but it becomes a lot more attractive when it is doing large zones like Lions Arch :) .

"Crossfire" as it was is now just another computation device more then it will render frames, that makes life a lot easier then what was done before.

You can still do frame rendering through it but it is not as tied down to doing that job any more.

Indeed!
In BFH beta, multi GPU worked right away with Mantle but had to wait till Cat 14.6 RC2 for a DX CF profile.

Wasn't Max Payne 3 a good PC game? As in, it utilized PC's capabilities quite well when it came out?

Yes, Max Payne was a great PC game. And CoD developers tweeted last year that it looked like they were going to start working on adding Mantle support. But who knows for certain about this list as it is based on rumors. :)

Max payne 3 was awesome on pc. I'm a little skeptical on gta v, so we will see on that one.

Max Payne also started on PC ( i still have 1 and 2 on my shelf)

Also curious to see how Mantle will improve performance of the new upcoming Tomb Raider with TressFX!

Last game used all the hardware it could get, multi-threaded on CPU, Crossfire...etc... now curious to see how much more efficient it will be, with less wasted resources from not using DX11.

Of course Devs would prefer AMD continue to develop Mantle after DX12 release. AMD will DEFINITELY continue work on Mantle. Console games are the driving force of triple-A development and porting is easy with Mantle. Like it or not, the PS4/XBONE will be the development platform of choice for AT LEAST the next 5 years. That is the reason so many devs are jumping on the Mantle train. Optimization is a perk but the real advantage is cost savings in code migration. Lets also not forget that Mantle can be ported to other platforms: Mantle Tablets, Mantle Phones, Mantle Linux, Mantle OS10. Tablet gaming is a HUGE business coup!

I'm not much of a console gamer but the fact that companies like Rockstar can make games that look like GTA5 on toasters like the PS3/360 is an absolute miracle. The next generation of console ports will be epic!
