75 developers are now working on Mantle titles in the consumer realm.

Mantle is heading to the workstation space. AMD hasn't released a public Mantle driver for its FirePro graphics cards yet, but a beta program is underway. A number of software vendors, some of which are "not small," are already on board.
I'm pretty sure those include at least Autodesk and Adobe as they already support OpenCL in several of their products. This will be a huge win.

Also AMD is giving Khronos full access to Mantle to shape the upcoming OpenGL rewrite.
AMD has given the organization unfettered access to Mantle and told them, in so many words, "This is how we do it. If you want to take the same approach, go ahead." Khronos is free to take as many pages as it wants out of the Mantle playbook, and AMD will impose no restrictions, nor will it charge any licensing fees.

This section was pertinent as far as mantles contributions.

"While Huddy didn't say how closely OpenGL Next might mirror Mantle, he repeated the contention that Mantle shaped DirectX 12's development. We expressed some doubts about that contention when we addressed it earlier this year, but Huddy was adamant. Development on DirectX 12's new features may have begun before Mantle, he said, but the "real impetus" for DX12's high-throughput layer came from the AMD API."

So even if microsoft was working on dx12 long before mantle, the focus seemed to be more on new features rather than a focus on lower cpu overhead.

So when people trot out there is/was no point for mantle since many of the benefits will be baked into dx12, take a moment to thank amd for better cpu usage and the massive increase of draw calls possible.

It's like duke nukem forever. Do you think the product they intended to design in the '90s was the EXACT feature-identical paper-perfect to the piece of software vomit that was released 1.5 decades later?

Yes, DirectX was probably 'in development' ever since DirectX 11 hit retail cards, but you must be in a lower IQ range if you don't think there was an emergency meeting at Microsoft DirectX development to discuss the announcement of mantle and the integration of low-level access as a shoe-in feature add on.

This is all good news. But wondering what Mantle will be able to gain on OpenCL when doing compute or is it that certain things within Mantle are easier to code for in an application then using OpenCL?

If you are referring to the workstation side right now most 3D apps are not at all optimized for AMD. The workstations that all of the programs are developed on will have nVidia cards in them. If AMD can get Autodesk and Adobe, for example, to do Mantle ports of their software (at least the most commonly used apps in the industry. Maya, 3DMax, AE, Premier...) it would be a massive win.

I would say this is where AMD getting the MacPRO GPU contract will be helping them big time working with developers like Adobe and others which need to tweak their applications for Apple devices, and now AMD GPUs at the same time.

Then extending this to the PC version, maybe with a mantle-part easy port? Very interesting times ahead on the professional front.

AMD is definitely moving full steam ahead! This makes me quite happy.

Another dumb question: Can we download mantle, is it out now? How do we choose it over DX? I've noticed [H] has some BF4 tests where they use mantle, how does that work? (I don't have BF4)

The game has to directly support it and it would be built into the game engine itself. Also, you have to have at least installed a recent driver to take advantage of it. If the game supports Mantle, it will be a choice somewhere in the game menu.

You can download the starswarm demo if you want to check it out.

German website Hardwareluxx revealed that Crytek’s upcoming PC version of Ryse: Son of Rome will support AMD’s Mantle API. This obviously does not surprise us as most – if not all – future CRYENGINE-powered games will support this API. After all, we believe that this was one of the reasons Crytek decided to implement native support for Mantle in CRYENGINE.

Ryse will support 4K resolutions and aims to look glorious on the PC. In addition, the PC version of Ryse will come with bonus material originally released as downloadable content, including: The Colosseum Pack containing two character skins and two Arena maps; the Mars’ Chosen Pack containing one new character skin, four Arena maps, and the new Survival mode; the Duel of Fates Pack containing two character skins, two Arena maps, and one additional Survival map; and the Morituri Pack, with three new Arena maps, two Survival maps, and five solo Arena maps.

Ryse: Son of Rome is currently planned for a Fall 2014 release on the PC.

We’ve already contacted Crytek and we’ll have a tech interview about this game in the coming months, so stay tuned for more!
