Anyone tried/found/experimented with centralized management software to manage a fleet of iPads? Got a client that's been starting to use them for their remote nurses.....out in the field (peoples homes, nursing homes, hospitals)...they use the built in 3G to remote access their TSGateway server (using a remote app called iTap Remote).

They want to use the e-mail client of the iPad to hit Exchange...so the nurses can get to faster e-mail quick checks instead of having to launch RDP to get to their full terminal server profile. However..the iPads only have a 4 digit max login/lock thing. We consider that weak.

So we want a way to manage the fleet..in case a nurse says it got lost..."Click a button" and wipe the iPad.

If you use the iPhone Config Utility (has a new name now) you can force them to use a long strong alphanumeric password. As far as remote wipes, just make sure you set up their email using the exchange server option so it uses activesync and you be able to send the device a remote wipe through the normal MS way (we use google so I'm not sure how to do it from exchange).

Apple also really recommends that you use a MDM service. Airwatch seems to be one of the better ones.

The iPad has bigger than 4 digit passcodes. Turn off "Simple Passcodes" in the settings.

Airwatch is not to bad of a setup, they offer software as a service

Apple Configurator was released in the Mac App Store not long ago too for this purpose. Don't have any experience using it though.

Bet you know this already and need something more feature rich but .. Exchange 2010 offers an easily accessible 'wipe device' function. I haven't tested it on our androids or ipads. Anyone have issues with this? Possible miss: if a device was lost/stolen the wipe would probably only be performed if/when the device accessed exchange.

What other people have said, turn off simple passcodes and exchange 07/10 has an option to wipe the device. The user can even do it themselves by logging into OWA and choosing Options-Mobile Devices-Wipe all data from device.

We utilize 60 ipads in the field for our therapists. We use Exchange 2010 which allows remote wipe of any Activesync device which includes the ipad, iphone, Android phones, etc.

The iPads have a 4 digit code as a simple authentication, but you can turn that off and make it longer. It encrypts the ipad when the code is activated so all data is safe. Also you can set it up to where if entered 10 times wrong, it will WIPE the ipad clean and loses all the data. 4 digit code with this combined is good enough protection.

We use PDF Expert Enterprise for all PDF forms to be filled out, and signed electronically with digital signatures and biometric data.

They receive their Exchange email to the ipads, and we use Dropbox with PDF Expert to transfer the documents back to our servers into a secure place. They have no need for RDP on the ipads as they have everything they need in the field on the ipad.
