I'm looking for an inexpensive managed desktop 4-8 port switch. I have a limited number of drops in my office, and I often find myself needing to access VLANs that are intentionally not routed to the user networks. All I'd like to do is turn my office drop into a trunk, and connect it to the switch on my desk. Then I'd be able to setup each of the ports to a particular VLAN and I can switch back and forth without much hassle.

Netgear GS108T.
HP v1810-8g.

Either would be fine, there are cisco small business alternatives if you want to spend a little more.

If you just need to connect your computer to the different VLANs, get a VLAN capable nic, like the Intel Gigabit CT (PCI-e) or Gigabit GT (PCI).
If you need to connect multiple devices, my nod would go to the Cisco SG208. Cheapest would be TP-Link WR-741nd running OpenWRT

I never thought about DD-WRT on a device, that's very interesting, and I'm pretty sure you are right about price, $29.99 is definitely the cheapest for a new switch.

Looks good having price in mind, imo 1810-8G by HP isn't very good. It's sluggish admin interface turned me off and it also stops after a few months so you need to power cycle it.

If it's anything like my 1810-24G it's a great device. If money wasn't an issue that's what I'd be getting. But since money is an issue and I'm going to be using it at work, I just wanted something cheap since I'll be paying for it.

No, because the CIO doesn't want to waste his operating budget since he knows I can work around it. I'm sick of cringing every-time I make changes to production equipment during operating hours, just praying I don't somehow take an entire 48 port switch worth of staff offline temporarily.

Do you need it to be gig? If not, you can probably find a used Procurve 408 for cheap. If you do need gig ports, see if you can a Dell 2708, as they are fairly inexpensive also.

Though, as has been said above, if money was no object, I'd go with an 1810.

Do I need it? No. Would I like it? Yes. I'm looking at the NetGears currently because they are pretty cheap 2nd hand. But if that doesn't pan out, I'll get a 408 since I love the ProCurves so much.

Netgear in your price range will drive you absolutely crazy, pulling out your hair. I bought a new smart PoE switch 2 years back and the web interface would not work reliably with any current browser- some flaky Java issue where they wanted you to use IE6 as a work-around. No serial port. If you are going used route, get a Dell PowerConnect 5224 or newer- they are bullet-proof and use a CLI very similor to Cisco IOS. A 5212 can sometimes be found for $50, but you have to be patient.
