Man Killed By Exploding PC

[H] reader Steven Peterson sent me a link to one of the most bizarre stories I have ever read. Some guy was killed when his computer literally blew up in his face. Investigators have no clue how the incident occurred but you know it is only a matter of time before overclocking is blamed.

“Ram Prasad had gone to take bath. He told us that suddenly he heard a blast and when he rushed out he saw the charred body of his friend and fainted,” the officer said. However, the case has baffled the investigating officers.

I've never heard of a computer exploding before. In fact, it seems quite impossible. I can't imagine anything "exploding" inside of a computer.

However, I would deem it possible that the power supply arced and electrocuted him. Which would explain the instant death, and the burning.

Other than that, I can't see anything exploding, never mind exploding with enough force to kill instantly...

Faulty power cables can explode. I did a custom modification on an older power supply following a guide about some 7 years ago, I forget what it was. I plugged the cord into the wall, and within the span of a half a second, the entire cord glowed red, then ballooned, then exploded, tossing me on my ass a couple feet away.

Ouch.

My fingers were numb for a few hours.

Maybe he had a monster CRT monitor and the tube exploded? Personally I can't imagine anything in a PC being able to explode with enough force to char and kill though.

the PSU is the only thing that can possibly explode... but even then, it'd be like azhar, not enough to kill.

i think it was murder from the roomate. he must've put in c4 in the PSU, so when his unsuspecting roomate went to power it up ;0

tonite on The World's Most eXtreme Overclocks...

died in the line of duty *salutes*

Later the news will be:

Man dies when computer explodes. The roommate claims the victim was severely overclocking his computer in order to play the video game Crysis at higher settings. Fortunately the victim died before Crysis could rot his brain and influence a shooting spree.

Crysis averted, if you will. :p

Not quite the same, but I remember watching some guy overclocking his computer with liquid nitrogen or somethign and the CPU busted a whole into the table. Though... a charred body doesn't sound right.

"We are yet to ascertain the cause of the blast."

Obviously there's more to this than just an exploding PC. Because we know the media is really accurate when it comes to reporting these things...

I give it four weeks and this will be on:

A) Law & Order
B) CSI
C) Mythbusters

They said his remains were charred. Spontaneous Combustion perhaps? If the laptop was sitting on him when he went up, it would also get burned to a crisp. I wonder what other damage there was in the room, as spontaneous combustion usually leaves chairs people are sitting in and other things relatively uncharred :p

A CRT is only thing capable of something like that. Even then, it would implode, and the glass shrapnel would come out forward and you'd have to be in a narrow cone to get killed by it.

Maybe he didn't read the screen after your mission.. when it says this disk will self destruct.

Obviously there was something "custom" in the computer. Ordinary computer parts are in no way capable of exploding with that kind of force.

It is impossible for the tube (if he was using one to explode). Those tubes are in a vacuum so they would have actually have imploded which actually have similar results to an explosion. If the tube did implode, the guy would not be chared but instead have glass imbeded in him.

Somehow I think the investigators will find that the victims clothing is soaked in gasoline, and his monitor was smashed with a baseball bat.

Or maybe it was C4 rigged to the Delete key.

This is what happens when you use a cheap PSU.

With C4 stuffed in it.

the real issue is not that it bload up, but WHAT DOES JACK THOMPSON HAVE TO SAY ABOUT IT??!??!?!?!? :p
(sorry, had to do it)
