making your own ide/scsi cables

oi gents, anyone ever try making/chopping up some ide and scsi cables to get perfect lenght end to end and between devices?
 
Oh yeah. I had an 18 inch floppy cable I shortened to 6 inches. All I did was take the connector off, re-locate it with care to the number 1 pin location, pressed it back on, and cut the excess wire off. It was really easy.
