ok, i kinda want to make my own case, im homeschooled and my parents like me doing "creative projects" and this would be very good... so before i start i want to get some info... here goes.

1) can i order partsonline...i mean things like metal posts, but pre cut and everthing, and other things like sheet metal cut to specific lengths etc.
2) any one else done this on here and can u give me some tips?
3) how would i mount the side panel? i was thinking about it and i looked at my other cases and they are some how mounted(i dont understand what they do) so maybe i'll just screw mine on...any suggestions on this?
4) how much money am i looking at for a 2X2X2 cube? this includes supports and sheet metal...

i saw some other ppl makingtheir own cases and i kinda want to try :)

Man, I just read a cool article on someone who made something called the "Ice Cube" (I believe) out of alluminum. It was fitted togeather very cleverly by cutting slots for each side to slot into the adjacent ones. (hold up two fingers on each hand and push your two hands togeather slipping down the middle of the two fingers on each hand, man thats hard to explain). It also looked pretty cool. I will go look for the article, maybe someone can linky to it if they know it and I cant find it. You could probably get some ideas from it. I'll go look for the linky....

Part of the cost depends on what you want the case made out of - plexi or metal, and if you want to use a premade mobo tray or not. I really recommend a premade tray for a first build.

There are sites like onlinemetals where you can by the metal from, or you may be able to get a deal from a local machine shop. You can Use L channel or square hollow tubing for your edges.

check out the refurb or clearance cases on newegg. You can probably get a case that you can scavenge for the mobo tray and wiring harness pretty easily. Same with the drive cages. When doing a major mod or a complete custom build, I usually go for a premade mobo tray and wiring harness if possible. Almost always a premade backplane.

Some things you will probably need: 6/32 drill & tap set. Dremel, jigsaw, hacksaw, mitre box (for the square or angle cuts on the L channel), safety glasses.

i got a cheiftec dragon case i think ill take parts from... i think i can do a sheet of metal that slides out as the mobo tray andthen the back of a casething that screws on and holds it in.. im goin with metal for sure, aluminum or something... do i really need a dremel? i dont wanna spend 50 bux just on a new tool.... i have a hacksaw, and i can get a tap pretty easily...got snowboarding goggles for safety... i have a jigsaw, would that work??? im kinda hoping for a black/silver cube case with 2 compartments, one for drives andwatercooling and the other with the mobo.. and the mobo tray would be the dividing thing...how thick would the aluminum have to be to be sturdy? oh yeah one last Q whats a MITRE box?

I plan on using lexan as a mobo tray for my [H]ard|Breadboxx project I am currently working on for my wife (pics when all my parts come in). I definatly would look around local metal shops for raw materials, concidering the price on shipping might be a lot. They can even help in bending and cutting. A lot of places (for a price) will cut to your specifications and it will look really nice.
